Jared 'Joker' Leto
It's no surprise that David Ayer's Suicide Squad is a film that many Joker devotees and moviegoers are eager to see when it hits theaters August 5th. Being the third installment in the DC Extended Universe after 2013's Man Of Steel and the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, it's safe to say this film will do well with both critics, audiences, and also at the box office.
Out of the many things to look forward to in Suicide Squad, one in particular is the return of The Clown Prince Of Crime, played by Jared Leto. Leto, who has been in many great films with a wide range of portrayals such as Requiem For A Dream as Harry Goldfarb, Chapter 27 as Mark David Chapman, and Dallas Buyers Club as Rayon, is one who fully dedicates himself to his roles. He is known for being a method actor and never breaks character when off set until the film is done shooting.
Is this guy.....
Speaking of method acting, Heath Ledger, who portrayed The Joker in 2008's The Dark Knight, stayed in a hotel room for a month and kept a Joker diary while formulating the behavior, posture, voice, and mind of the character. It seems Leto took inspiration from this to conduct his own method acting as well; he spent time alone listening to old gospel music, read shaman literature, and never stopped acting out his role even when the camera wasn't rolling. Fellow cast member Will Smith (Deadshot) went as far to say that he never met him. From his trailer scenes we've seen so far, he looks like he's having a pretty fun time being the craziest person on the planet sporting that well groomed green hair.
One thing that both Ledger and Leto have in common is the type of role they played before becoming The Clown Prince Of Crime. Heath played Ennis Del Mar, a bisexual sheep herder in 2005's Brokeback Mountain. Jared portrayed Rayon, a transgender woman as mentioned before in 2013's Dallas Buyers Club. Both of these roles are vastly different than playing The Joker, and it took a big leap to switch around and portray an iconic character they've never done before. It shows just how good an actor can be if he can play in diverse roles that make him virtually unrecognizable from one film to the next.
Not much is known about The Joker's role in Suicide Squad yet, but it is very much unique and stands out more than the others based on the film's poster which was revealed a few days ago. He might be a villain or a member of the Suicide Squad itself, and the romance he has with Harley Quinn in the comics seems likely to happen in the film.
This take on The Clown Prince Of Crime is one we've never seen before, wearing bright, flashy clothes, with tattoos all over his body, and a pair of silver teeth. I believe the silver teeth come from a time when he met face to face with Batman after he killed Robin, but Batman's number one rule is to not kill, so he decided to leave The Joker alive but knock almost all his teeth out instead. That's a little fan theory of mine.
I along with many people are really excited for Suicide Squad, and if Jared Leto's performance is as good as it seems in the trailers, then we might even get to see an Oscar worthy performance as well. He has a big standard to meet judging from the great portrayals of The Joker we've seen on film from Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, and although comparisons have and will be made, Leto's take on the character will be one of a kind.
