Just in time for the 20 year anniversary of Independence Day, we're now preparing ourselves for yet another epic battle between our planet and those threatening our safety with Independence Day: Resurgence.

The follow up film to Independence Day promises to show us the world as if the events had actually occurred in 1996. After we defeated our alien invaders, we took their technology and have since used it to make great leaps and bounds in the world of science.

After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Thanks to the film's website WarOf1996.com, we have access to a detailed timeline outlining how the world of Independence Day has diverged from our world since the events of the movie.

Hybrid Fighter Test Flight

Sadly, the test flight claimed the life of the famed Colonel Hiller (Will Smith).

"While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.”

Moon Base

This Moon Base is only the first of many precautions taken to help protect our planet from intergalactic threats.

"Monitored from its command center in Beijing, China, the Earth Space Defense Moonbase opens as ESD Director David Levinson presides over the ribbon cutting ceremony. Designed with both offensive and defensive weapons capabilities, the Moonbase is the first of several planetary bases designed to monitor our solar system for potential alien threats."

Alien Inspired Tech

New tech inspired by Alien technology sounds like a dream. Or maybe a nightmare...

"June 4: As a Keynote speaker at the 2011 TEDx Conference, ESD Director David Levinson highlights some of the breakout consumer products that were inspired by alien technologies - including touchscreen smartphones, bladeless fans, drones and airport security scanners."

From working at a cable company to cutting the ribbon on a lunar moon base and leading TEDx talks on alien tech, MIT graduate David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) has really come up in the world.
