Since 2011, Showtime's Shameless has shown the outrageous highs and horrifying lows of Chicago South Side residents, the Gallagher family. While a little but of familial chaos occurs naturally in households far and wide across the world, the Gallaghers do dysfunction better than anyone else.

Although Shameless is regularly punctuated by some seriously shocking moments, there are a handful that I think stand out above the rest.

1. Monica's Thanksgiving Suicide Attempt

'Just Like the Pilgrims Intended'
Season 2, episode 11

In a show that always leaves audiences thinking "Holy shit!", Shameless went particularly dark toward the end of the second season. As the Gallaghers finally come together as a happy family to celebrate Thanksgiving, their dinner is interrupted by Monica's shocking suicide attempt in the kitchen.

2. Mandy Runs Over Karen

'Frank the Plumber'
Season 3, episode 9

Everyone knows that fighting over your crush can get a bit dramatic, but Shameless took things to the next level. After tiring of Karen's advances on Lip, Mandy took matters into her own hands by hitting Karen with her car in an extremely graphic scene.

3. Karen Proves Her Dad Right

'Daddyz Girl'
Season 1, episode 4

It was pretty astounding how quickly Karen went from the virginal daughter in a white dress to a gothic girl embracing her father's choice of words. Karen's spiral downwards into her teenage angst comes to a head when she has sex with Frank and shares it on the Internet for the world to see.

4. Fiona Almost Kills Liam

'There's the Rub'
Season 4: Ep. 5

Poor Fiona. Despite her best efforts to get everything right, somehow life keeps pushing her back down. Just as she seems to have a moment of sweet relief from her stressful life, baby Liam gets ahold of Fiona's cocaine and overdoses. The episode closes with Liam in the hospital and Fiona in handcuffs.

5. Ian And Mickey Hook Up For The First Time

'Frank Gallagher: Loving Husband, Devoted Father'

Season 1, episode 7

In what has since turned out to be one of the better and more stable relationships in the whole series, the start of Ian and Mickey's affair was one of the more shocking events in the whole season. Right when you think Mickey and Ian are going to kill one another, they end up furiously making love.

6. Dottie 'Butterface' Let's Frank 'F' The Life Out Of Her

'I'll Light a Candle for You Every Day'
Season 2, episode 3

The death of Dottie "Butterface" Corones, who was desperately in need of a heart transplant, was to be expected, but it was the way she was sent off that makes this scene one to be remembered. After Frank lies and gets her name taken off of the transplant list, Dottie's last wish is to be f*cked to death. Frank isn't good for much, but he was happy to oblige.

7. Debbie Finds Out She's Pregnant

'Love Songs (in the Key of Gallagher)'
Season 5, episode 12

If you're anything like me, this scene resulted in a groan and the exclamation "Debbie noooo!" As the youngest Gallagher girl, I had hopes that Fiona's sacrifices would not be in vain and she would somehow escape her childhood unscathed. Sadly, that wasn't the case. This season, the fate of Debbie's baby is one of the key storylines, and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

8. Karen Gives Birth To Hymie

'Just Like the Pilgrims Intended'
Season 2, episode 11

After the entire season build up to Karen giving birth to Lip's baby, it was pretty shocking to find out that the baby had been born with Down Syndrome and, even more shockingly, that it was Asian. Lip may have narrowly escaped being a father, but seeing him go through the heartbreak was pretty difficult to watch.

9. Steve Comes Back From The Dead

'Lazarus'
Season 4, episode 12

Some fans may have seen this one coming, but this was a pretty shocking twist for audiences and even the cast. The showrunners kept Justin Chatwin's involvement in the season a total secret, so it wasn't until the episode aired that the stars of the show even knew Jimmy/Steve was back.

10. Frank Masturbates On Bianca's Grave

'I Only Miss Her When I'm Breathing'
Season 6, episode 1

Season 6 of Shameless opened up just the way we like it. Frank's disposition on life may have changed since Bianca's passing, but he's just as depraved and perverted as ever.

Over the course of the show there have been tons of twists and turns, so this list is in no way exhaustive, but it certainly touches on some of the more pivotal moments in the show's history. Now that the sixth season has begun, I'm eager to see what kind of shocks Shameless will bring us this year.

What's your No. 1 most messed up Shameless scene?
