Now that the hype for The Force Awakens is starting to die down a little we can probably start to expect a little more information about the next Star Wars film, Rogue One. For some fans of Star Wars speculation is half the fun and now that we've had a break from over-indulging on every minute morsel of detail about the Force Awakens the focus is on Star Wars very first non-saga movie. So far all we've seen are a few blurry, out of context set photos and a little synopsis on the plot. Rogue One as we know is about a group of rebels who steal the plans for the original Death Star, setting up the events of A New Hope. Today we've learned a little bit of new information from the folks at JoBLo. Just a warning LIGHT SPOILERS are ahead! Nothing major but if you want to ignore details on Rogue One you may want to revisit this later.
- The film will feature Stormtroopers that wear all-black armor called Death Troopers, seemingly taking a cue from the Shadow Troopers of the now defunct Star Wars Legends series.
- There’s a new droid character that works with the Rebels, and he’s a “scene stealer”
- One of the main characters is named “Cashen,” but it’s unknown which actor is playing him/her
- A new TIE Fighter design and AT-ATs will be shown in Rogue One
- Darth Vader is in the movie, and he has a “larger role than originally thought”
This report also details more about the film. The new droid which as of now is un-named is reumored to be an imperial robot which has defected to aid the rebels. He is said to have long arms, long legs, and grey or black in color. This droid is said to be "a change of pace" which makes one speculate if this droid is the mo-cap character being played by Alan Turdyk. This would make since considering building a droid with human human characteristics like "long arms, legs" and more than likely bi-pedal would be tough to pull off.
When it comes to Darth Vader it's hard to estimate what a "much larger role" actually means. Mainly because we don't know the size of Vader's planned involvement in the first place. Perhaps Vader was originally planned to be just a cameo. Obviously if Vader is now in a few scenes that would be much larger than just a cameo. However, I think it's fair to speculate if Vader is now a central antagonist in the film. Seeing Vader at the height of his powers and most evil would not only be exciting but give fans a chance to see why Vader was the most feared person in the Galaxy. Something that many people would like to argue was one of the few weak points of the original trilogy. This was a quote via JoBlo from the set of Rogue One.
"The action sequences filmed are unknown, but there was work pitching the different ways Darth Vader could kill rebels on a battlefield with the Force and his lightsaber. The storyboard “pitches” showing decapitated rebels, people being dismembered by Vader throwing his sword, levitating bodies to make human shields and so on. The art was more violent than what we’ve seen Darth Vader do on screen before."
CHILLS! If true Vader's return to the big screen could be more epic than we ever could have imagined. Watching Vader pluck off Rebels one by one showcasing his full Sith fury would be a sight to behold!
