We all know that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was packed full of Easter Eggs referencing the original trilogy, but few spotted (or rather heard) the movie's subtle nod to Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima.
The official Star Wars website recently published a list detailing the audio contributions made by its vast troop of voice actors:
You may have seen a section in the credits of The Force Awakens titled “Additional Voices,” with some familiar names listed. But who or what did all those familiar names play? I’m happy to finally reveal everyone below, running through the film chronologically. (There are also a couple of actor cameos in there that shall remain nameless (for now).)
The particular line of dialogue worth noticing is spoken by sound designer Robert Stambler during the attack on the Jakku village. Check it out:
Now, it's impossible to know exactly who, or what, the Red Eyed Sand Alien is referring to when he says 'Kojima,' but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the actual narrative of the scene. It's worth noting that 'Kojima' does translate to “small island,” but considering Jakku is lacking any gulf or surrounding water this doesn't explain the line's purpose.
So, the logical conclusion is that this tiny tidbit of dialogue is J.J. Arbams's way of paying tribute to his friend Hideo Kojima
The legendary game designer recently visited Abrams at his studio Bad Robot so Kojima could "inform him about my new studio." You can bet Hideo was pretty stoked at by his name's inclusion in one of the biggest movies of all time, especially as a fan of the series. And he wasn't going to give up a photo op with a certain member of the film's cast:
It's fantastic to see that awesome Easter Eggs like these are still being discovered in The Force Awakens and makes you wonder just how many more are still hiding in there...
