Last year Zayn Malik shocked the world by quitting the highly-successful and critically acclaimed band One Direction after five years, four worldwide tours, and numerous platinum records.
As surprising as his departure was to his fans, Malik says his intention to leave was a decision he had made early on in their careers.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, the former One Direction member admitted that he had wanted to leave the band from their first year of working together, mainly due to artistic differences.
“I think I always kind of wanted to go, from the first year, really. I never really wanted to be there in the band, I just gave it a go because it was there at the time."
"I realized I couldn’t put any input in. I couldn’t give my opinion on this or that because it didn’t fit the grain of what we were or what we represented.”
Although it's hard to imagine giving up that boy band life, it sounds as if his artistic integrity was being compromised by sticking with a group he didn't fully vibe with. And while Zayn's bandmates didn't want to see him go, they knew he'd have to leave eventually.
"I think the boys kind of knew - in terms of the music - that wasn’t my cup of tea.”
"They obviously didn’t want me to leave, but they couldn’t talk me out of it at that point. I’d already made my mind up so I just left.”
I guess that's just the way the cookie crumbles. We with both Zayn and One Direction nothing but success in their future musical endeavors! Not that either parties need it.
