If you're a fan of strategy and are longing to have your fill in 2016, then you'll be glad to know that there are some highly anticipated titles on the horizon. Whether they be from well-established franchises or fresh IPs, we're optimistic for some decent challenges ahead.
But what are they up against? What recent strategy games have blown you away? 2015 saw the release of titles like Heroes of the Storm, Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, Invisible Inc. and Total War: Attila. Can 2016 offer up some titles to compare with the lauded masterpieces of 2015? Let's see what's coming!
2016: Strategy Games To Watch
Just out of interest, what are your favorite strategy games of all time? Which titles stand above all else? Here's my list: XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Total War: Shogun II, Civilization V, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, Command & Conquer: Red Alert and Homeworld 1 & 2.
Total War: Warhammer
The Creative Assembly are returning in 2016 with the next installment in the beloved Total War franchise. The Warhammer IP has certainly placed restrictions upon the traditional gameplay of Total War (such as the removal of mod support) however, the level of detail on display and the fact that we're talking about The Creative Assembly here have us believe that this will be one of the best strategy games of 2016! Are you hyped?
XCOM: Enemy Unknown isn't just one of the best strategy games of all time in my opinion, it's one of the best games ever. Period. The idea of getting to enjoy XCOM 2 in a matter of weeks has me endlessly hyped for an adventure of superb quality. Firaxis have delivered some fantastic games in the past and I have faith that they're about to deliver a superb sequel. Are you as hyped for XCOM 2 as I am? Let us know in the comments!
The creators of Borderlands are returning with their first new IP since 2009, and we can't wait to see how it plays out! While the game is traditionally an FPS, there are MOBA-like strategy elements that have included the game on our list. With stunning visuals and Gearbox's rep, we can't wait to try it out! The game will also feature a leveling system, which resets when a match begins. Players start with the same basic level, and they can unlock new skills and abilities during a match. Sounds like a strategy to me!
Honorable Mentions - Total War: Arena & The Elder Scrolls: Legends
The Total War IP is busy this year, with the arrival of [Total War: Warhammer](tag:3627632), and an online multiplayer adventure called Total War: Arena. The game will be free-to-play, and will allow players to co-ordinate military attacks against other online players. Can't wait! Additionally, we have Bethesda's answer to Hearthstone, with the release of The Elder Scrolls: Legends. This card game better be good!
