[Star Wars: Battlefront](tag:2684021) certainly has proved to be polarising game with the tendency to divide gamer opinion right down the middle. An visually beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable online multiplayer in its own right, it's still been criticised by some fans for a the lack of single-player campaign and the somewhat repetitive gameplay.

We've been waiting for DLC news for a while now, hoping for something new and exciting to inject life back into the game, and we've finally got some!

EA Announces Free DLC!

From the looks of things this news pertains to a free DLC package, not DLC that forms part of the Battlefront Season Pass, which means Season Pass holders have even more to look forward to.

Here's the official line from developers EA:

"All fans will get free content that includes new maps for both multiplayer and Missions modes, the introduction of Private Matches, new Hero outfits, and more. Fans looking to get even more out of their Star Wars Battlefront experience can look forward to the Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass, which will introduce a wealth of fresh content set across exciting new locations including Bespin, the Death Star, and more."

Oh damn, the Season Pass is suddenly sounding pretty tempting. All in line to re-enact the famous Cloud City "I am your father" scene!

A Tatooine Map!

Yes! Finally! Finally we're going to be able to play upon the desert planet of Tatooine, the dry dusty land that provides the backdrop for our introduction to Luke Skywalker in [Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope](tag:3531492) way back in 1977, as well as the home world of the young Anakin / Darth Vader.

There's a lot of Star Wars lore contained within Tatooine, and tons of possibilities for this map. Could we finally get to play through that wretched hive of scum and villainy, Mos Eisley? Can we shoot first in the Cantina? Most importantly; can we go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters?

Which Modes Will It Support?

The "Tatooine Survival map" will support the following multiplayer modes:

  • Blast: The Battlefront version of Deathmatch, ten Rebels verses 10 Imperials in a no holds barred fight to the death.
  • Droid Run: A six-verses-six battle between Rebels and Imperials in a struggle to get your hands on the three GNK Power Droids, and keep them.
  • Drop Zone: Capture the flag...ish. Fight for control of the crashed escape pods alongside your team in an eight-verses-eight match.
  • Hero Hunt: Take on the mantle of one of the Star Wars heroes, from Luke to Darth Vader, and try to hold your ground against the enemy forces...
  • Heroes vs Villains: Troopers and the iconic franchise heroes collide in this mode, allowing Luke Skywalker and others to fight as part of your team.

But that's not all! We're also getting a bunch of other content, including new planet Hoth-themed outfits for Luke and Han Solo; Private Matches; Daily Challenges; Community Events and a lot of updates to both weapons and the multiplayer modes themselves.

For the full run down on all the new content check out the official announcement from EA here! The new DLC content is available now, so don't delay!
