The live action television series Supergirl has gained serious momentum and is now half way through its first series. Starting off slightly shaky for the first few episodes many were on the fence when it came to the show, but now bringing in some major players from the comics of DC it is truly soaring in popularity.

Supergirl benefits the writers in one major aspect that Arrow and Flash writers will struggle to justify, who the heroes face in battle. While Arrow and Flash are both very dynamic characters they lack the brute strength held by the daughter of Krypton. Just by her having raw power at her disposal it has allowed the writers to match her strength with recent adversaries and upcoming ones. Episode 11 really stepped it up and gave us a major hint at potential future foes. The White Martians have arrived in Supergirl.

With the introduction of the White Martian it gave the show a 'two birds with one stone' deal. Firstly Kara had to face her most deadly foe to date, and it allowed them to use Martian Manhunter to explain how dangerous these aliens are.

With them covering how the White Martians wiped out all of the Green Martians, with the exception of J'onn J'onzz, it illustrated to fans new to the Martian races just how deadly they truly are. The final moments of us seeing the White Martian, we are warned that others are coming, potentially setting up a future antagonist. We also have Bizarro-Girl entering in episode 12, another character with sheer power in her fists.

While having an Earth-based origin unlike her comic book counterpart, it is still clear that Supergirl is going to face a tough foe. Thanks to sources, we already know that Laura Vandervoort will be joining the cast as the villain Indigo for a future episode, but what other all mighty forces could come flying Kara's way?

Silver Banshee

The Silver Banshee has HUGE potential for appearing in the series. Italia Ricci is set to appear in the 14th episode as Siobhan Smythe, the alter ego of Silver Banshee. While I suspect she will not be appearing as the Banshee yet, I do think it is planned for the future.

The simple reason for my doubts of her becoming Silver Banshee just yet, is because Laura Vandervoot and Brit Morgan were both announced as their super-powered characters, not just by their alter egos. The advantage is that it gives the show time to establish an arch-enemy for Supergirl, a character designed to hate our heroine and want for her demise!

Volcana

Volcana could follow in the footsteps of a villain already set to appear in Supergirl. The character Live Wire along with Volcana were both created in the 1990s Superman animated series. Since then she has only ever had two comic book appearances. Because of this, Volcana can give the writers a complete green light to go creative crazy on building the character into the series.

It could also lead to her and Live Wire working as a pair in the future, forcing Supergirl to deal with fire and electricity all at the same time. Before skeptics question the idea it, is worth noting the Harley Quinn was created in the 1990s Batman animated series that ran parallel and crossed over with the Superman series. She is now arguably DC's most valued female asset.

Solomon Grundy

Grundy is a personal favorite of mine. He is such a simple villain driven by pretty basic impulses and needs. However, he is also relentless in his pursuit of a goal once he has one, and is extremely physically strong. Grundy could force Supergirl into both a physical and metaphorical corner. Where he has such limited cognitive functions, Hank could insist Supergirl destroy the monster, forcing her to deal with the idea of potentially killing someone.

Metallo

Metallo

Metallo is typically a villain associated with Superman, but Supergirl gives them a perfect origin opportunity for the villain. With Maxwell Lords desperate to create weapons to defeat Kryptonians, who better to create a hybrid of both man and machine powered by his foes greatest weakness, Kyptonite. With this scenario it would give them a chance to bring Martian Manhunter out to play more often. Without Supergirl's weakness to Metallo's power source, Martian Manhunter can be the one set to deal with the new threat.

Brainiac

Brainiac

Let's face it, we would all go crazy if they pulled this bad boy out. I also think Brainiac is a better choice for a big villain from Superman's world than any of his other big threats such as Darkseid. Unlike her cousin, Kara witnessed first hand the destructive power of Brainiac which has naturally given her mixed emotions when facing the character. Add to this Martian Manhunter now fighting to protect his new home after losing his home of Mars already, we would have two powerhouse superheroes ready to take down the collector of all data in the universe.

Now Supergirl has began to establish a fanbase, I would wager it is safe to bet on a second series. All this will do is increase the bad guys and girls of DC in the series and this is only a potential five they could use. What they decide will be up to fate but I am sure we will not be disappointed.

Check out the teaser for the next episode of Supergirl!
