With the much anticipated Oscar award evening right around the corner, (Feb 28th), I thought we could take a look at some brilliant talents that have contributed to some of the finest, most popular films.
I'm sure that not everybody will agree with some of the Oscar-less actors being on this list, but all these performers have their merits, and Oscar worthy or not, they are still pretty good!
1. Leonardo DiCaprio
Leo hasn't won an Oscar. And I'm sure that's not news to anybody. DiCaprio is known across the internet for being that actor that should have gotten an Oscar already, but hasn't. Although being nominated 6 times, he is still empty handed. He has been nominated 189 times for other awards, and has won 66 of them, however none are an Oscar.
There is a strong chance for Leonardo to achieve his wish in the next Oscars, though. He has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, after his 2015 film, The Revenant. DiCaprio plays a captivating, mesmerising part, and we are all hoping he gets it this time.
2. Harrison Ford
Known primarily for either the role of Han Solo, or for his portrayal of the title character in the Indiana Jones films, Harrison Ford has been a little part (or for some, a big part,) of everybody's childhood. Ford was immediately launched to fame after playing one of the lead roles in Star Wars, having previously done little TV work and no film work at all, and his talent and contribution to modern cinema has been recognised. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has a few Golden Globes.
However, Ford has never gotten an Oscar. He was nominated for Best Actor in Witness, but lost out.
3. Sigourney Weaver
After her role as Ripley in Alien, Sigourney redefined badass female lead. She then showed a different side in Ghostbusters, playing the beautiful, and sexy damsel in distress. She took another twist and her audiences on an emotional journey as she played Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist. Weaver has also taken on many other roles and of course executed them perfectly.
Although winning a BAFTA, two Golden Globes and being nominated three times for an Academy Award, she has never won one.
4. Johnny Depp
Not all of Johnny Depp's roles have been mainstream, and not all of them have been successes, but some of Depp's characters and roles are undeniably great. Known best for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd, Depp is typecast as the oddball. However, Johnny originally was typecast as a heartthrob, like in the film Cry Baby, a label he didn't want to have, and thus came the weird and wonderful characters. Johnny has also been known to take on more deep and emotional films, such as What's eating Gilbert Grape.
Depp was nominated 3 times for an Oscar, but has been unsuccessful.
5. Will Smith
Putting his criticism for the Academy aside, Will Smith is a brilliant actor. Known throughout the 1990s for his role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Smith was typecast as a 'funny guy'. Although humour is an aspect Will tastefully features in many of his characters, such as Agent J in Men in Black, he has been known to make us all near to tears, such as The Pursuit of Happyness. For many kids growing up in the 90s and 00s, Will Smith has had a huge impact, mostly due to his roles in Bad Boys, Independence Day, Hitch and I, Robot.
Although never winning an Oscar, Smith has been nominated for 2, and is not only giving us another emotional piece with Concussion, but also dishing out some action in Suicide Squad.
Of course, there are many, many actors who could have been included; Tom Cruise, Viggo Mortensen, John Travolta, Liam Neeson, Glenn Close, Mark Wahlberg, and Jim Carrey, and Oscars aren't supposed to be given to everybody, that's why Oscars are such an honour to recieve.
Ultimately, these actors don't need an Oscar to prove they are great, they do that themselves in the roles they play.
