Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week, actor Ewan McGregor spoke at length about his latest western, Jane's Got A Gun. As well as looking to the future to discuss his upcoming movie, also starring Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton, he also took us down the path of nostalgia by relaying his brief involvement in the latest Star Wars installment.
As the story goes, in an effort to tip his hat to the prequels, J.J. Abrams summoned the force of one of its most legendary Jedi Masters, Obi-Wan Kenobi. And if you managed to miss the momentary voice cameo in The Force Awakens, McGregor has taken upon himself to point you in the right direction.
Discussing the line with the talk show host, the actor recalled being ecstatic to be called in by the director to take part — after all, the last we had seen of Ewan's Obi-Wan was in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith:
In the final stages of post-production, McGregor revealed recording words for Rey's vision sequence when she touches the lightsaber:
"I recorded a line for it. It was very late in the day, I'd been waiting for the call to come for two years! Maybe they'd lost my agent's phone number! But I got a call just shortly before it was released from JJ [Abrams] saying, 'I'd love you to be in it. There's a sequence where we can use a voice, we hear Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice coming from the distant reaches of the forest.'"
The most phenomenal thing though was the fact that his voice was actually manipulated in with that of the late Alec Guinness in a perfect tribute to the old and young versions of Kenobi. The studio used dialogue that McGregor had previously recorded, which was then blended with audio taken from a Star Wars installment Guinness was in:
"The line is, 'Rey, these are your first steps.' But they got Alec Guinness to do 'Rey,' which is extraordinary because he's not alive anymore!" he explained. "They got a line of him as Obi-Wan Kenobi saying 'Afraid' and cut it so he says 'Rey,' then I say 'these are your first steps.'"
Cool or what!?
