Last week marked an acutely unsettling first in Pokémon history, when Ash's beloved yellow companion Pikachu spoke actual human words and sounded, rather discordantly, like an old Japanese man.

The jarring revelation came in the form of the following trailer for Pokémon spinoff Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo:

Nintendo has not yet confirmed whether Western audiences will be able to solve Sherlock-like crimes as the shrewd electric mouse, but you've got to wonder what Pikachu would sound like in English if the game did make it over. Fans began suggesting voice talents as bizarre and varied as Keith David, Isaac Hayes, and Mr. Holmes himself, Benedict Cumberbatch.

But then, an inspired brainwave: What if Pikachu were voiced by the Penguin himself, Mr. Danny DeVito?

Around 38,000 people on Change.org concur that DeVito is the right man for the job, with this petition continuing to gain traction. The proposal simply reads:

There are a number of us that feel as though Danny DeVito would be a prime fit for the voice acting role of the Detective Pikachu. We want to make this happen.

Can't quite imagine it? Tealhollow1 has created a delightfully surreal mock-trailer that makes this unlikely amalgamation a reality:

Well this petition just earned itself one more signature.
