When you think of Nick Jonas, you may well automatically think of Camp Rock. Despite the popularity of the pre-teen musical drama, the Nick Jonas of 2016 can no longer watch this song and truthfully say, 'This is Me'...
In fact, eight years after his Camp Rock premiere was viewed by 8.9 million people, Nick Jonas is a rather more... complex character. Speaking to Complex, Nick Jonas addressed the public's questions about his sexuality, mainly spawned from his playing gay in Scream Queens and Kingdom:
“It’s funny. I play a gay character on a TV show. Whether it’s me or the character, at the end of the day it’s still my body, it’s still telling the story. It’s the character and his journey, but it’s my body, my lips, my hands.
There’s always going to be negativity toward anything that is a positive effort toward change. As a heterosexual male, [I am] open and comfortable about loving my fan base, gay or straight, because to me there is no difference, it is my fan base. Your sexual preference does not matter to me and it shouldn’t matter to anybody. I thought [the criticism] was kind of dumb, considering I play this gay character on a gritty show. There’s a gay sex scene. I kissed a man."
Good for you, Nick. His advocacy for acceptance of others seems to be having a positive effect on his own growing feelings of personhood and confidence:
“The goal is acceptance on all levels— that should be the focus. I’ve gone to normal clubs, straight clubs, and I’ve gone to gay clubs, to party with my friends and fans. There’s no difference. I have nothing to prove.
I feel really free. The most free in my life that I’ve ever been. Career-wise I don’t feel trapped. I feel great. And as far as me, Nick, as a person, I feel the most free. Here’s to free Nick. He’s way more fun to be around.”
It's certainly true that 'free Nick' is kinda fun to be around, even dropping a slightly less scandalous version of the Led Zeppelin shark story: the Jonas Brothers were once mailed a little dead shark:
“That was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen."
So, if 2016 Nick Jonas is gonna disappoint all the gay dudes and just be a lovely, accepting free spirit, who is he interested in, romantically? The Complex interviewer asks, rather boldly, "Are you having sex with Kate Hudson?” Jonas's reply is pretty cute, actually...
“Umm. You know, it’s interesting. You’re allowed to ask me whatever the fuck you want and I’ll answer it, or not. Kate’s incredible. We had an unbelievable connection as two humans who just admire things about each other, and see something in each other that’s beautiful. Out of my best effort to respect her and her privacy, I’m not going to say if we had sex or not. But we did have a beautiful connection. Even now I have so much admiration and respect. She’s amazing.”
That's a yes, then? Meh, whatever. Dude seems happy, and that's what matters.
Who is your favorite Jonas brother?
[Edit: Clearly a lot of you really like Kevin Jonas. The people have spoken!]
