Mike Stoklasa and Jay Bauman from Red Letter Media have the best Youtube channel on the internet. Their Half in the Bag and Best of the Worst shows are funny and entertaining. They've now finished their feature length movie Space Cop and...it's bad. Really bad. It pains me to say it, but its true. Let me explain.
Space Cop has the duo's sarcastic humour and ironic tone but it mostly falls flat. Most surprising about Space Cop is how boring it is. Poor pacing and grossly over extended scenes is to blame for the running time running a lot longer than it should. Why is this film longer than the glorious schlock they celebrate watching on Best of the Worst?
The performances are all self aware so I didn't have a problem with the acting, but they could have been funnier and more interesting. Story-wise there's nothing special here - a hotchpotch selection of scenes that provide a couple of laughs but don't add up to a coherent whole. A couple of scenes hit the spot thatnks to Rich Evans. He has good timing for physical comedy.
I am being critical in this review but I have to be. This is a feature length movie that I paid to watch so I can only approach it like any other movie. It can't be an excuse that Space Cop is deliberately bad or wants to be so bad it's good. They wanted to make a film that was tongue in cheek and tips its hat to moments we enjoy from bad movies. However Space Cop was boring and unfunny. I'm sure they didn't intend that.
