Though certain fans may doubt whether Street Fighter V has what it takes, we firmly believe that we're gearing up for one of the best fighting games in a while. If Capcom manage to improve upon the formula they gifted us all with Street Fighter IV in 2008, we could even be looking at one of the best fighting games of all time!
However, this highly anticipated PS4 exclusive has some stark competition when it comes to emerging as the ultimate fighting game of this decade (so far). There is one other title that Capcom and DIMPS need to contend with for that title, and it is of course one of Nintendo's great masterpieces.
Street Fighter 5 Vs Super Smash Bros. Wii U
Lauded. It's all you can really say in terms of how Super Smash Bros. Wii U was received following its release date in late 2014. The Smash community accepted it just as warmly as the critics did, and that in itself is a rarity. We saw statements like "It's everything I wanted it to be," and "If entertainment is a science, Smash Bros. for Wii U deserves the Nobel." It's a remarkable progression from what's come before and the true successor to Melee.
Can Street Fighter V's Characters Rival This Lot?
Now the question is whether Street Fighter V can do the same for its franchise. We've seen what DIMPS and Capcom are capable of when they invest a tremendous amount of time and effort into not only innovating but respecting the Street Fighter legacy. Street Fighter IV was more than we could have anticipated, but that doesn't exactly mean that they have the formula down for the continuation of the franchise.
What we sincerely hope Street Fighter V accomplishes is similar to what [Super Smash Bros. Wii U](tag:3766492) has. The characters of Smash Bros. have such tremendous depth and range. There's so much room for personal expression and mastering of abilities. We've seen plenty of comments and opinions on Capcom's characters for Street Fighter 5, such as the new creation Laura, or how Ken has changed his look and combat style. But will they satisfy fighting fans?
At the end of the day, there are certain features that we demand from Street Fighter 5:
- A compelling narrative that draws from the wider Street Fighter lore and media.
- For it to channel the essence of classic 2D fighting games like Street Fighter 2.
- Breathtaking graphics that will truly herald the arrival of Street Fighter on next gen hardware.
- A balanced and expansive roster.
But will all of this be enough for Street Fighter V to dethrone something as compelling and exceptional as Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Wii U? Could we see any fighting game rival this masterpiece in this decade? Let us know where you stand with Street Fighter V and whether you're excited for its release date on Playstation 4.
