2016 is finally upon us! There are countless films to be released this year, but there are always only 10 that are the ones to definitely look out for. If you’re not excited already for what’s coming in 2016, you will be when you my list of the “Most Anticipated Movies of 2016."This list could probably change as we go through the year. My list goes from February to December, so sorry January, you never exactly show the best quality of films. Now, without further ado, here are the films to look forward to this year!
10. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (May 20, 2016)
The sequel to the huge, 2014 comedy hit features the return of Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as Mac and Kelly Radner, reteaming with Zac Efron’s Teddy to take down the sorority sisters who move in next door. The film also has new cast of characters including Chloe Grace Moretz, Selena Gomez and Carla Gallo. The first film had a stellar cast and was also one of the funniest movies of 2014, and this new one won’t disappoint. Seth Rogen is teaming up once again with Evan Goldberg and director Nicholas Stoller to create what I think will be another huge comedy hit.
9. Ghostbusters (July 15, 2016)
We all know the original Ghostbusters was a huge hit back in the 80s. Soon after, a sequel was made in 1989 but it fell pretty short. But now after 25 years, the series reboot will be one of the standout films of the year for sure. The movie has the most impressive comedy cast which includes Kristen Wig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon in lead roles, and Chris Hemsworth is set to play a receptionist. Get ready to laugh out loud because of the cast's certain chemistry. Prepare to see original cast members and countless other celebrity names. Take notice, this film will show that these four ladies can bust ghosts as well.
8. Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them (November 18, 2016)
Ever since the Harry Potter film franchise concluded in 2011, fans have been hoping for another round of magic and wizardry. But in 2016, fans will finally get to see more of what we've been asking for since the closing credits of the last Harry Potter film. Fantastic Beast is a unique twist on the magical universe. The film will have similar take on the book in the franchise. Eddie Redmayne will be the lead character and will take magic and wizardry to 1920s America. What’s even more exciting is that the director of the previous few Harry Potter films, David Yates, will return to the director’s chair, and the screenplay is being written by creator J.K Rowling.
7. Untiled Bourne 5 Film (July 29, 2016)
This film is widely anticipated because it’s the Bourne that will bring the series back to its starting point. It’s confirmed that Matt Damon will reprise his role of Jason Bourne and Julia Stiles will return as Nicky Parsons. What takes the excitement to another level is that they are adding characters to the series. Actors such as Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel, and Alicia Vikander are joining the cast as characters yet to be announced. This film will be considered as a sequel to the third film, and we see another return to beloved director Paul Greengrass, who was responsible for the last two Damon Bourne films Supremacy and Ultimatum. Get ready for another amazing, action-thriller this summer!
6. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (December 16, 2016)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was of course one of the most anticipated movies of 2015, and went on to be the most talked about movie of that year. So now that there is another move with the name Star Wars in the title, it’s going to be on everyone’s radar. You can’t get any better than a spin-off that involves a team of rebels planning to steal blueprints for the original Death Star during episodes 3 and 4 and was mentioned briefly in the fourth Star Wars film. The cast is just epic and includes Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, martial-arts king Donnie Yen and the Ben Mendelsohn as part of the main cast. This first of many anthology films will be directed by Gareth Edwards, who gained widespread recognition for his work on the successful Godzilla reboot in 2014. It’s the ultimate Christmas gift Disney can give two years in a row. (December 15, 2017)
5. Deadpool (February 12, 2016)
Eight years ago Fox gave us the worst interpretation of any comic-book character on film by doing what no one wants anyone to do: shut the Merc with a Mouth up! That was Ryan Reynolds’s first portrayal of the character, but we are now giving him and Fox another chance to get the perfect redo. This film is a total reboot of the character but true to the comics. Cancer-stricken mercenary Wade Wilson gets transformed into Deadpool, a wisecracking superhero with incredible fighting skills and an incredibly bad attitude. Tim Miller is the director of this film and Reynolds is backed by a great cast featuring Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, and Gina Carano. With all these light superhero movies out and about, it’s time to see a brutal but funny side of a superhero!
4. Suicide Squad (August 5, 2016)
Now this may be 4th on this list, but it is definitely the most unpredictable film this year. The film takes place in the same universe as the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film, and involves dangerous super villains, which include Will Smith’s Deadshot and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. They are recruited to stop a powerful enemy who we still know nothing about. Soon after, these villains realize that they might being set up. They still must complete the mission even when death is a factor in the process. This comic book film is doing what no other comic film has done: putting the fan favorite villains on center stage. And fans get to see Jared Leto as the first onscreen The Joker since Heath Ledger’s award winning performance in 2008. Suicide Squad has the most insane cast of the year and we won’t be ready to witness the most insane set pieces comic book films have to offer. It’s not evil vs. evil, it’s bad vs. evil! This is something to look forward to and could be this summer’s blockbuster hit.
3. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25, 2016)
Warner Bros. is making cinematic history by bringing two of the biggest comic book characters together and squaring them off in one feature length film. Yeah, Suicide Squad is doing something no one has done before as well with its amazing cast, but the idea that two of these recognizable heroes are battling each other in live action is just breathtaking. Ever since Henry Cavill’s Superman almost destroyed half of Metropolis in 2013’s Man of Steel, Ben Affleck’s Batman isn’t one of his biggest fans. This hatred gets Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor to pit them against each other. Wonder Woman makes an appearance, in addition to the unstoppable Doomsday. This is exciting because it’s the first stop to 2017’s Justice League. But for now fanboys and casual superhero lovers, it’s time to place your bets, because this is going to be the showdown of the ages.
2. X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27, 2016)
It may sound like it’s the end of days for your favorite mutant heroes, but it’s more like the starting point or rise of the X-Men as a team. This new X-Men team will have to face off against the most powerful mutant they have ever encountered: Apocalypse." This destructive mutant has been already shown during the post credits from 2014’s X-Men Days of Future Past and it seems like he’s no ordinary mutant. Professor X (James McAvoy) and Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) recruit their team of X-Men to stop the recently awoken Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) from unleashing the end of days. This is more of a disaster story, and that is what makes this film so much more interesting because we haven't seen anything like that coming from an X-Men film. Fans have thought of giving up on the X-Men franchise, but after seeing films like First Class and the mega hit Days of Future Past, we now know we are getting what we all have hoped for. Director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg will return for the film. Casts from both First Class and Days of Future Past are set to return, giving this film even more of an ensemble cast! James McAvoy is also going bald for this one!
Honorable Mentions: Zoolander 2, Doctor Strange, Hail Caesar, Finding Dory, Triple 9, Star Trek Beyond, Warcraft, Assassin's Creed
1. Captain America: Civil War (May 6, 2016)
Marvel is doing it again. Marvel has always given fans a movie to look forward to ever since 2008’s Iron Man. But hype for this third installment to the amazing Captain America trilogy is on another level. One year after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, politicians create a system that will call the Avengers when needed. It ends up fracturing the team and pits heroes that support Captain America against heroes that support Iron Man. Civil War may look like another Avengers movie thanks to the most impressive superhero cast to date. Iron Man, Ant Man, Hawkeye, and Black Panther and more are all set to star in this superhero epic. A new villain will eventually emerge and it’s up to the entire team to put away their differences and unite. The Russo Bothers are back after putting themselves in the comic book movie spotlight after 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Solider. It’s more than Captain America and Iron Man punching each other in the face. This is an all-out war and fans get to pick a side!
