Super Bowl 50 is this Sunday! So in honor of this epic event I've listed 10 Comic Book alter egos for some of the NFL's biggest stars.
- 1) NDAMUKONG SUH IS THE INCREDIBLE HULK
Big, ferocious, unstoppable force with a noticeable anger problem. Ndamukong Suh is a defensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins. At 6'4", 307lbs Suh is a force to be reckoned with to say the least. His combination of size and speed strikes fear into the heart of every opponent. Not to mention Suh has been fined and even suspended for losing his temper and smashing opponents in ways that aren't so appropriate and definitely not within the confines of the game.
- 2) CLAY MATTHEWS IS THOR
Obviously Clay Matthews has the Thor look, especially the long blonde hair. However the similarities don't stop there, just as Thor comes from royalty as the son of Odin and ruler of Asgard, Clay Matthews comes from a long line NFL greats in the Matthews family. With no disrespect to the Mannings, the Matthews family is the first family of the NFL! Combined the Mathews have 7 members of their family that have competed in the NFL, starting with Clay's grandfather Clay Sr, father Clay Jr, Uncle Bruce who played in a record 14 pro bowls and not to mention a brother and two cousins who are currently on NFL rosters. Combined the Matthews family have played in over 800 games including 22 pro bowls. I wonder if Clay and his brother Casey's relationship was similar to Thor and Loki's sibling rivalry?
- 3) TOM BRADY IS CAPTAIN AMERICA
Okay, you're thinking I picked Captain America because Tom Brady plays for the Patriots, well honestly that's just a bonus. Like Captain America, Tom Brady embodies the good old fashioned American Dream. Tom Brady was a backup QB for a good portion of his college career at Michigan. When Tom was declaring for the NFL draft the odds were not in his favor. He was labeled too small, un-athletic, slow and weak armed. Nonetheless, Tom was drafted by the Patriots with the 199th pick of the NFL draft. A guy drafted that late rarely gets a chance to play, much less start, especially Quarterbacks. However, Tom not only made the team but early in his second season the Patriots starting QB Drew Bledsoe was injured and knocked out for the year. The Patriots already had a losing record at that time and many believed their season was over. Instead Tom Brady led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl victory in history! Tom Brady is now arguably the greatest QB in NFL of all time with four Super Bowl victories in six appearances. Combine that with enormous celebrity status, a supermodel wife and more money than he can count. If that's not the American dream I don't know what is. Before Steve Rogers became Captain America he was labeled too weak and small to be a soldier, instead his heart and desire were the credentials that gave him the opportunity to be the greatest soldier ever. America was built by the underdogs who desired for more and wanted the freedom to show it. Now, America wins. You may not like her tactics but you can't dispute her greatness, much like Tom Brady.
- 4) CAM NEWTON IS SUPERMAN
The 2016 NFL MVP is Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton. While this will be Cam's first MVP award and perhaps his first Super Bowl MVP the following night in Super Bowl 50, Cam has thought of himself as Superman for a long time. His signature celebration mimics the Man of Steel ripping off his shirt to shred the secret identity of Clark Kent to reveal himself as Superman. At 6'5", 245 lbs Cam Newton is a monster QB and bigger than many of the defensive players he's up against. Not only is Cam a deadly pocket passer with the ability to destroy defenses with arm strength, but he's also just as fast and as big as a locomotive. His skills are not of this planet, he's able to leap defensive lines in a single bound and see through defensive coverage with x-ray vision and barrel over linebackers with incredible strength. Cam Newton is definitely the NFL equivalent to Superman.
- 5) ODELL BECKHAM JR. IS SPIDER-MAN
In New York, there have been sightings of a man donned in blue & red, preforming outstanding acts with amazing abilities. This man is said to have super human strength, incredible speed and agility with perfect balance and equilibrium. His hands posses amazing grip as if they were made of glue and has an amazing sense of his surroundings. No, not Spider-Man, it's Odell Beckham Jr. Odell has more receiving yards in his first two seasons than any WR in history and no shortage of highlight reel plays to boot. His acrobatic one handed catches makes him the Spider-Man of the NFL. I'll let this video make my point, the last catch is stuff of legend!
- 6) PEYTON MANNING IS BATMAN
The goofy Papa John's guy with the "aw' shucks" persona might not have the dark and brooding demeanor that you would associate with the Dark Knight. However the elder Manning brother and Batman have more in common than you might imagine. Peyton Manning may not posses the superhuman skills and abilities like that of his peers, he's slow, relatively un-athletic and for a professional Quarterback doesn't have the best arm. However through an understanding of his enemies, relentless preparation and genius level intellect Peyton is able to use his wit and guile to annihilate his opponents. Peyton has shown toughness and perseverance throughout his career allowing him to not only play through injuries but recover from injuries that would end the career of others. Batman has no real superpower (except a ton of money), but like Peyton Manning, Batman takes a more cerebral approach towards his opponents allowing him to manipulate their mental weaknesses. Batman overcame countless devastating injuries such as a broken back but found a way to recover to defeat his foe. It doesn't hurt either that Batman and Peyton always have a trick up their sleeve.
- 7) RUSSELL WILSON IS STARLORD
Both Starlord and Russell Wilson are wily improvisational gunslingers. When you watch Russell Wilson play, inevitably you'll see him surrounded by massive defensive lineman bearing down on him at full speed from every angle. Somehow Russell will escape the clutches of the defenders, scrambling aimlessly around the field before launching a prayer of a pass to a open wide receiver. When the play is over you wonder how in the world Russell Wilson did it, or if it was planned all along. Similarly Starlord is a crafty cosmic maverick who finds himself in tough spots with his enemies only to escape his enemies regardless of impossible odds with virtually no plan. Wilson and Starlord both rely on guts, instinct and wit and it's very fun to watch.
- 8) JJ WATT IS WOLVERINE
Fueled by primal urge, tenacious hunters striking fear into their prey with an uncanny ability to sense weakness. Both JJ Watt and Wolverine seem to be indestructible and unstoppable when on the prowl and when cornered can transcend into a "berserker" rage with the aggression and brutal intensity of an enraged animal. JJ Watt is a two-time defensive player of the year and has already compiled 75 QB sacks in his short career. Arguably the best defensive player in the NFL, JJ Watt seems to have superhuman senses to match his uncanny strength much like the Wolverine.
- 9) AARON RODGERS IS IRON MAN
Like Tony Stark's Iron Man suit Aaron Rodgers is a finely tuned, well engineered, highly accurate, extremely precise deadly weapon. Like Stark, Rodgers had to start his career in the shadow of greatness and was burdened with high expectation. For Tony Stark it was his father Howard, for Aaron it was the legendary QB Brett Favre. Both not only lived up to the expectations but in many ways exceeded them allowing them to crawl out of the shadow of their respective predecessors and cement their own legacy. Not to mention both men have a strong goatee game.
- LUKE KUECHLY IS THE PUNISHER
- RICHARD SHERMAN IS DEADPOOL
- ADRIAN PETERSON IS THE FLASH
- MARSHAWN LYNCH IS BEAST
- ROGER GOODELL IS THANOS
Well that's it for my list. I'm sure you have you own opinions so comment below. Be sure to enjoy SUPER BOWL 50
