On episode three of the Good Horror Bad Horror Podcast Stephen and I discussed the infamous 2006 UK horror film “The Descent”. The Descent was directed and written by Neil Marshall and man...oh...man did he nail it! This movie is about a woman who goes on vacation with her friends after her husband and daughter encounter a tragic accident. One year later she goes hiking with her friends and they get trapped in the cave. With a lack of supplies, they struggle to survive and they meet strange bloodthirsty creatures.
Neil Marshall’s ability to use such great actors to portray these creatures almost makes you think he is using CGI. Let me be clear, he is not! Neil Marshall used real actors…not stunt men but actors. These actors sat through three and a half hours of makeup to turn into vicious bloodthirsty creatures, and their performance blew my mind. In addition Neil Marshall drew real human emotion out of the cast by never allowing the cast to interact with the actors who played these creatures, and the cast never even saw what the creatures were going to look like until the first encounter scene was shot in the movie with the horrific cave dwellers.
With a 3.5 million dollar budget, this movie made horror movie headlines and grossed in more than 57 million dollars worldwide. Lets all give a standing ovation to Neil Marshall on this one!
