I didn't know what to expect when I decided to turn on the new television dramedy You, Me and the Apocalypse, but I was wonderfully surprised by its wit, characters and story! If you watch the first episode I can guarantee you'll be hooked right away like I was!
The story itself is the extremely compelling and relatable tale of several people as they explore what they want to do with their final days before a meteorite hits Earth, destroying the human population. It's a story of faith, love and desperation that all of us will be able to relate to on some level.
The actors are absolutely amazing, and this wonderful cast is another great reason to check the show out!
Mathew Baynton as twins Ariel and Jamie
In Baynton's dual role of both Jamie and Ariel he truly shows his acting range. Jamie is a very boring, organized and routine driven bank manager who has been pining over his missing wife for seven years. When he's arrested and questioned about her whereabouts he's shown a recent picture of her with someone who looks like him and loses his mind. Turns out Jamie was adopted and his twin, Ariel, has become an international terrorist. Jamie's lost wife seems to be with his lost brother and after the announcement of the world ending, he heads on a quest to find them both.
Jenna Fischer as Rhonda
We all know and love Jenna Fischer from her extremely lovable character Pam on The Office, and she does not disappoint in You, Me and the Apocalypse! Fischer plays Rhonda, a mother wrongfully accused of hacking the NSA. She's in prison awaiting trial for this crime, but even though she pleads guilty, she's only protecting her 15-year-old son who is the real hacker.
Rob Lowe as Father Jude
Rob Lowe was a household name before Parks and Recreation where he gained a resurgence of comedy fame, and became one of the most loved characters of the sitcom. In his role, Lowe plays Father Jude, a chain smoking Vatican priest assigned to confirming and disproving miracles. Jude has become a very cynical and spiteful man in this position as he often sees the worst in people claiming to be the recipient of miracles in hopes for fame.
Gaia Scodellaro as Sister Celine
Sister Celine might be my favorite character so far! She has had little life experience, and has seen none of the world aside from her tiny convent where she doesn't fit in. She travels to the Vatican to interview as an assistant for Father Jude. He pushes her buttons, questions her integrity and faith but before storming out this timid woman rips into him. With her show of strength Jude offers her the job and the two begin working together searching for answers of the apocalypse.
Megan Mullally as Leanne
Everyone loves Megan Mullally, right? She was the hilarious Karen on longtime NBC sitcom, Will & Grace, as well as amazing recurring character Tammy Two, the ex-wife of Ron Swanson, on Parks and Recreation. It might take you a minute to recognize Mullaly with her blonde hair and swastika tattoo on her forehead, but it's her and she's hilarious as white supremacist prison inmate Leanne! Leanne escapes from the prison with Fischer's character and the two go on a road trip searching to be with their families as the world is coming to an end.
These characters are spread out all over the world, but will somehow cross paths in the craziest, and most unpredictable ways. I'm so excited to watch a show that has a laid out plan from beginning to end, and am so looking forward to see how these characters all come together.
The entire first season has already finished airing in the UK, but here in the US we've only been given the first two episodes so far! The ten episodes are set to be released weekly on NBC, but you can also catch up on Hulu!
