Everyone loves a hero, but I always find the most intriguing character to be the villain. Especially a female one! Here are my personal top 5 favourite villainesses:
1. MALEFICENT (Sleeping Beauty)
A horned witch that can turn into a fire-breathing dragon?! In my books, that’s pretty badass. Also known as the “Mistress of All Evil”, she curses Princess Aurora after not being invited to the christening. Talk about holding a grudge!
However, in Disney’s 2014 Maleficent (played by Angelina Jolie), we get to see a more human side of the wicked sorceress.
2. URSULA (The Little Mermaid)
Half human, half octopus/squid, this sea witch uses her magic to help merfolk achieve their desires in exchange for their souls. She convinces Ariel to give up her voice AND soul, in exchange for a pair of legs in order to be with Prince Eric.
Sounds like a deal with the devil!
3. MYSTIQUE (X-Men)
Played by Rebecca Romijn, Mystique is a shape-shifter who can transform her voice and appearance to look like anyone. Combined with her ability to kick some serious ass, she is also responsible for the assassination of several important leaders.
Jennifer Lawrence plays the younger version, when Mystique was formerly known as Raven Darkholme.
4. THE EVIL QUEEN (Snow White)
"Magic Mirror, on the wall"...
The Queen is Snow White’s evil stepmother who has a magic mirror, and is obsessed with being the “Fairest in the land”. After being told by her mirror that Snow White is the new fairest maiden, she becomes envious and concocts a plan to kill her.
I don’t blame the dwarves for being scared of this green-eyed monster!
In the 2012 movie, Snow White and the Huntsman, Queen Ravenna (aka Evil Queen) is played by Charlize Theron.
5. QUEEN OF HEARTS (Alice in Wonderland)
"Off with their heads!"
The Queen of Hearts is the irrational ruler of Wonderland, whose answer to everything is beheading when things don’t go her way. Can we say psycho?
The Red Queen is played by Helena Bonham Carter, in Tim Burton’s 2010 movie.
