We haven't got long to go now until [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) is released! And thanks to the Super Bowl we've been inundated with new trailers and TV spots. One of them contained a cheeky reference to Batman's most iconic villain, hinting that we might see more of the Clown Prince of Crime than we expected...

Did you catch the Easter Egg? It's very subtle, but the Joker's presence is definitely felt in the skyline of Gotham...

It doesn't look like much, but Ace Chemicals is actually hugely important to the Joker's origin story, and it's also going to feature pretty heavily in Suicide Squad! Let's break it down.

Dumped Into A Vat Of Acid

The Joker's origin story is up for a LOT of debate — it's been retconned a bunch of times, and the Joker himself is an unreliable narrator so we can't trust anything he claims is true. But originally, the Joker was a small time crook (known as the Red Hood) before Batman accidentally pushed him into a vat of acid in, you guessed it, the Ace Chemicals plant.

The acid burns drove the man mad, bleaching his skin and giving him a shock of green hair. And thus the Joker was born.

So what about the Ace Chemicals hint in the Batman vs Superman trailer? Well, it's more than just a cheeky nod at the comic books, as the Suicide Squad trailer featured a scene from inside the same building!

Yup, that's Joker diving into a vat of acid, along with Harley Quinn. This could be her origin story, or it could be a bit later in the film (as we've previously speculated). Either way, we know this scene takes place in the Ace Chemicals plant, thanks to a set picture from the Instagram of Margot Robbie's stunt double...

The post was subsequently deleted, but it's safe to say that Ace Chemicals will feature in Suicide Squad.

What Does This Mean For 'BvS'?

Batman's history with the Joker has been made very clear by the Dawn Of Justice trailers: Bruce cryptically alludes to his dark past when talking to Clark...

"I just have a bad history with freaks dressed like clowns."

...and then of course there's the fact that Joker probably killed Batman's previous sidekick.

It's still a mystery as to whether this is Dick Grayson, or another Robin. So far this all just adds up to establish the Joker as a large part of this Batman's backstory, as well as to provide links between Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad. There are a few other connections: Batman was seen chasing down Joker and Harley Quinn in the first Suicide Squad trailer...

... and Zack Snyder confirmed to Empire that all the criminal members of Task Force X were put in Belle Reve by Batman himself.

All in all, DC are definitely establishing little crossovers between the two films, but what that adds up to is difficult to deduce. Will Joker cameo in Batman vs Superman, as rumors suggest? Or is the Ace Chemicals building just another link to Suicide Squad? Either way, at least we'll find out soon!
