When I was taking part in the MPU, I wrote an article based around the rumours of a new Saw film coming out. At the time, these were just that: rumours and speculation, and nothing had been said or confirmed since May 2015. At the end of the article, I said I'd keep you guys updated on any news that surfaced.
Well....I have some good news.
Lionsgate are looking to go forward with Saw 8, which will be titled Saw: Legacy, and have hired writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (Sorority Row, Piranha 3D) to write a screenplay for the film. As well as this, the original director and writer James Wan and Leigh Whannell have also been announced as executive producers.
Because this project is entering pre-production, it's unclear whether the film will be a sequel or reboot. I'm interested to see what direction this film takes, as they seem to have abandoned the roman numerals in the new title. This suggests that Lionsgate might do something different with the franchise. Whether they will or not remains to be seen.
However, I am really excited for this; the Saw franchise is my favourite film series ever, and has also been an influence for me with my film-making, specifically with the film editing side. The public also seemed to love the franchise too; overall, the films earned $874 million worldwide, as well as getting two video games, figures, T-shirts and a rollercoaster and maze at Thorpe Park in the UK.
I'm extremely happy that this is moving forward and, as I said in the last article on this topic, I will definitely be doing updates as more news is annouced.
