One simple fact about CW's The Flash is that they don't often kill off villains. Whereas the villains of sister show Arrow will often end up dead after one or two appearances. Barry Allen and the S.T.A.R. Labs crew prefer to lock their 'rogues' up in their personal superhuman prison.
However, with this season being so Zoom focussed, we haven't had a chance to return to all the many Season 1 villains. So the recent news that another villain we haven't seen so far this season will be welcome relief to any fans tired of the constant focus on the dark speedster this year. Who is the villain that's returning you ask?
The Pied Piper!
That's right! Harrison Wells's (the Earth-1 Wells) former protege that he abandoned in favor of Cisco Ramon is coming back! Last time we saw Andy Mientus as Hartley Rathaway, it really didn't take Barry all that long to finish him off.
And it wasn't just Barry either. Cisco also had a turn at taking Rathaway down in the next episode.
It's going to be interesting to see what Hartley is up to this time around, with the Harrison Wells that he knew dead, will he go after his Earth-2 counterpart? Or will he go after Cisco again in an attempt to get revenge for Cisco beating him the last time? The important thing is that he will be back, apparently in episode 17 of the season. As Entertainment Weekly puts it:
"He’ll return in the 17th episode, fittingly titled 'Flash Back,' to wreak havoc once again on his former colleagues when The Flash impossibly revisits an earlier timeline."
That's certainly a fascinating synopsis. Barry is no stranger to time travel by now, having been getting more and more familiar with the concept ever since the 15th episode of the first season.
But this raises an interesting question, because the "impossible timeline" could be a reference somehow to the timeline that Barry erased that first time that he reversed time. Which wouldn't be a particularly good thing, as some of the other things happening in that timeline weren't so good.
Anyway, the Pied Piper is returning and you can catch him in episode 17 after Barry returns from Earth-2! Check out the promo for this week's episode below!
