The premise of the 'LG Super Bowl' ad is pretty straight forward: Liam Neeson appears next to an attractive younger man who is actually his past self. They're meeting up at a certain point in time to talk TVs and 'revolution,' sharing glimpses of things to come. What is not so obvious on first glance, however, is that the actor playing young Neeson is actually Liam's eldest son, Micheál.
What a dapper duo!
However, that's the only connection that really makes total sense in this rather weird (yet still great, because Liam Neeson) commercial. In the ad, Micheál is met in a bar by his older self which has travelled back from the future to share the secrets of advanced technology, and promote the new LG OLED TV (of course).
Clearly, Ridley Scott, the ad's executive producer, drew a lot of inspiration from Tron for the commercial — there's a scene in which Micheál must navigate an LED maze on a motorcycle, carrying an ominously unexplained briefcase. It's probably a bit better watching this when you're high on Super Bowl induced life, tbh.
Take a look for yourself:
Regardless though, it's great to see that Micheál Neeson seems to be back on track following his mother's (Natasha Richardson) death in 2009.
In a behind-the-scenes featurette released by LG, Liam gushed:
“Being able to work with my son Micheál has been absolutely wonderful and quite unique. It’s also our first time acting together and it’s great to share the screen with him.”
A feeling his 20-year-old son clearly shares:
“Working with my dad: a very cool experience, very cool. It’s weird seeing him in a different light to him making me do the dishes or waking me up in the morning.”
It's not the first time the pair have shared set time together though, as both had very minor roles in the second Anchorman movie, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
No doubt we'll be seeing much more of Micheál in the future, beginning with his first major film role as 20th century Irish rebel leader Michael Collins in The Rising: 1916, which will be released sometime this year. It's probably no coincidence that Liam Neeson also played Michael Collins in the 1996 film, Michael Collins.
Seems the apple certainly doesn't fall far from the tree!
