We haven't got long now until [X-Men: Apocalypse](tag:1194267) is released, and the cast have started building the hype for the movie. Oscar Isaac is ready to stun us with his godlike Apocalypse, and Michael Fassbender recently revealed Magneto has a kid (who isn't Quicksilver). And now Olivia Munn has stepped in to clear up some misconceptions about Psylocke's origins, and has dropped hints about why she thinks Psylocke could eventually join the X-Men.
But before we get into the details, check out the new Super Bowl advert, which finally gives us a glimpse of Psylocke in action!
Olivia Munn clearly knows her stuff, and her passion for the X-Men comic books means that she's put a lot of thought into her portrayal. But this Psylocke is different to the one we know and love...
A New Version Of Psylocke
The X-Men movies are known for having a bit of a shaky continuity, with timelines that don't completely make sense and characters who appear multiple times in different ways (eg: Kitty Pryde, who appears as a 19 year old, a 10 year old, and eventually played by Ellen Page). And it looks like Bryan Singer is ready to gloss over Psylocke's origin story, so that we get to see her at full power in X-Men: Apocalypse.
But for Olivia Munn, who is a confessed comics fan, this was a little confusing. She told Collider how she discussed Psylocke's origins with Bryan Singer...
"I was like, 'you know, there is that storyline'… I was really big about staying so true to Psylocke. In fact, I was like, 'Um, actually, she’s Psylocke because of the alien that took her body. She took on the name Psylocke because that was the alien’s name. And she becomes Psylocke after the Apocalypse,' but they’re like, 'Stop talking.' I literally wrote a paragraph at the end of [an email], 'Do you guys want to fire me now? Am I too nerdy?'"
Although Munn was originally slated to play Betsy Braddock, the mutant who was possessed by alien Psylocke, now it seems as though X-Men: Apocalypse will present a fully formed Psylocke at the height of her power.
Who she was before she became one of Apocalypse's Horsemen is still a mystery, and it's uncertain whether we'll get the answer to this in the film. But Olivia Munn is keen to assure fans that this isn't a problem.
"I think all audience goers are smarter than people give them credit for, so you don’t need to tell them too much. You can exist and be in this world and then if it happens or if anybody wants to later on, there can be, in other movies, where we can explore and explain that more and do a genesis kind of movie. Right now, she’s complete and there are some people who talk about it a little bit but it’s not really needed."
It makes sense for Bryan Singer not to delve too deep into Psylocke's origins, as there's a lot more going on in X-Men: Apocalypse. If there's one character we'll get origin story details on it's Storm, as Alexandra Shipp revealed.
So what about seeing Psylocke in other films? Well, Olivia Munn has dropped hints that Psylocke might eventually join the X-Men...
Psylocke Could Be A Hero
Ambiguity is essential for any good X-Men movie villain: the conflict in the films tend to be a clash of interests rather than good vs evil. While of course, the baddies are still bad, X-Men often challenges how we define morality, showing sympathetic points of view on both sides of the conflict.
Soon becoming a fan favourite character, Psylocke fought with the X-Men frequently in the comics. Although she follows Apocalypse in the movie, Munn thinks there's hope for the hero in Psylocke yet...
"Psylocke is as a very powerful weapon that has been used and abused by different people so that they could use her powers, and she’s somebody who’s just looking for a righteous purpose. Right now, that’s why she’s one of the bad guys.. She has really powerful abilities and is just looking for a purpose."
Could Xavier be the one to give Psylocke that "righteous purpose", and persuade her to join his mutant team? It's entirely possible, and would pave the way for Psylocke to star in many more X-Men movies to come.
Of course, the options are open for more than just X-Men films in this universe. the announcement of Deadpool 2 has got many fans buzzing about the possibility of an X-Force movie. And who wouldn't want to see these two heroes go head to head?
Olivia Munn and Ryan Reynolds make an excellent team, so here's hoping they get to star in the same mutant movie someday! For now though, Psylocke's role in X-Men: Apocalypse seems pretty awesome, and we can't wait to find out if she will be redeemed as a hero.
