2015 was the year of the RPG, there's no doubt about it. From the small and beautiful Undertale, to the epic nature of my personal game of the year Bloodborne, it truly was a time to lose yourself in imaginative and captivating worlds. Whether 2016 can match this level of quality remains to be seen. But we have our eyes on some prizes.
What's the one game that you're looking forward to the most in 2016? Are you anticipating Hello Games' [No Man's Sky](tag:2684052), or perhaps the long-awaited arrival of The Last Guardian & Final Fantasy 15? Though there are many titles to choose from there are two particular RPGs that have our full, undivided attention.
The RPGs Of 2016 - Mass Effect Andromeda Vs Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Though some may be looking forward to the final installment of the Souls franchise with Dark Souls 3 (I know I am), these two games appear to be the most popular choices of anticipated RPGs. After all, the Mass Effect trilogy was a cultural phenomenon and the Deus Ex games are some of the most respected in the industry's history. But which one has greater promise?
Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a lauded RPG. Fans and critics united in showering the title with well-deserved praise. Aside from the awkward and horribly misplaced boss battles, this was a perfect game. Now Deus Ex: Mankind Divided promises to rectify that issue:
"In a classic boss fight we will support combat, stealth, lethal, non-lethal, in ways we didn't necessarily manage in Human Revolution."
With this in mind, superb updated graphics and the promise of larger sandboxes, more intelligent AI, a whole variety of upgrades and a compelling narrative, August 2016 really can't come fast enough. This could be the Deus Ex game we've all dreamt of playing ever since the first title captivated us all on PC.
The followup to what has been referred to as "the Star Wars of our generation." How could that not be something to look forward to? Bioware have consistently demonstrated their keen abilities when it comes to game design. They're famous for their characters, narratives and remarkably deep RPG experiences. We've no idea what to expect from their latest adventure or how it will perform on PC, XBOX One and PS4.
Though we don't know all that much about Bioware's next game, we know that we'll be catapulted into the Andromeda galaxy following the events of the original trilogy. Shepard and the large roster of characters from the 1-3 are likely nowhere to be seen, as we explore a massive new portion of space in search for new connections and adventures. Sign me up.
For what it's worth, even though I adore Bioware's work, I can't wait to see what Square Enix have in store for us all with [Deus Ex: Mankind Divided](tag:3677367). I adore Human Revolutions and if its sequel promises to improve upon its design, then I'm sure I won't be disappointed. But if [Mass Effect: Andromeda](tag:2683449) is your choice for RPG of 2016, we'd love to hear from you!
