You can't deny that tensions are high surrounding the upcoming Academy Awards on February 21 — not only because speculation is rife on who is going to win big on the night, but also due to the fact that numerous actors have announced their plans to boycott the ceremony altogether. One couple in particular, Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, have been very outspoken about not attending over issues surrounding the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.
In case you were wondering though, Kate Winslet on the other hand, is most definitely going to be there. According to her, this year she has absolutely no plans to side-step the iconic awards ceremony and guess what, she's got all the reasons for it.
For one, the Steve Jobs star has said that she wishes to be present to support the other nominated women in her category. As you all probably know, Kate is up for Best Supporting Actress alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, and Alicia Vikander. Speaking to the BBC, the British actress said:
"To be honest with you, it has been such an extraordinary year for women, I'd feel like I was letting my side down if I didn't go."
Yet, it seems that the most important reason (and let's be real, it's not like we're surprised!) is Kate's unrivaled devotion to her best friend Leonardo DiCaprio. Ever since the two appeared in Titanic as two tragic, star-crossed lovers back in 1997, they have been serving us major relationship goals right, left, and center — I'm going to admit that at times their unprecedented love and admiration for one another has actually made all things seem right with the world in one fell swoop.
Anyway... if you're one of the few people who hasn't laid eyes on the hard-hitting, hypothermia-inducing trailer for the wilderness epic The Revenant, here it is once again:
Like many of us, Kate agrees that Leo's performance is extraordinary in the movie and she's hoping that this year really could be his year to shine as Best Actor at the Oscars. Because of that, she's basically claimed that nothing in the world is going to make her miss his big moment. She revealed:
"I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo's year. And he is my closest friend in the world, and I just couldn't imagine not being there to support him."
Earlier last week, she also filled our hearts with joy when she admitted that after all these years, her love for Leo still goes on:
"He's a solid, loyal person. He's a great friend, he always has been, and not just to me, but to everyone around him. He still has friends he had when we made Titanic."
This is DiCaprio's sixth nomination at the Academy Awards, but if he wins, it will be his first time taking home the prestigious accolade. Let's hope that Kate's faith in him leads him to greatness!
