With a career spanning over 25 years and the owner of one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces, today we're celebrating the golden girl that is Christina Ricci. Why? Because today is her 36th birthday!
She has come a long way since her first on-screen appearance, and as she dominated the cinema throughout the '90s, we thought it only fair to take a trip down memory road and look at her most iconic on-screen nineties moments.
1. 'Mermaids' - 1990
Aside from the fact that this movie stars two of the best people on the planet, Cher and Winona Ryder, Mermaids was Christina's first feature-length role. Playing Winona's younger, swimming-obsessed and endlessly curious sister, a 10-year-old Ricci adds a charming and adorable element to a household filled with raging hormones and enviable sass.
2. 'The Addams Family' - 1991
One year later, the budding actress cemented her presence on the film circuit with her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family. Ricci's naturally gothic and doll-like features perfected her role as the precociously morbid child.
Ricci reprised the role in the films 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values.
3. 'Casper'- 1995
Fast forward a few years and Ricci has bagged her first lead role as Kat Harvey in the live-action adaptation of Casper. After moving into an old manor haunted by Casper and his obnoxious uncles, Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso, she throws the best Halloween party ever and shares a moment with Casper's human form which basically made every teenage girl (and likely some boys too) literally die with jealousy.
4. 'The Opposite of Sex' - 1998
After appearing in a number of box office hits and indie features, Ricci won her first Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of the acid-tongued, seductive and destructive Dede in The Opposite of Sex. It was probably around this time your crush on Christina Ricci got a bit out of control.
Although she didn't win an Oscar for the role, Entertainment Weekly called their decision one of the 'Worst Oscar Snubs Ever.'
5. 'Sleepy Hollow' - 1999
Her final '90s role came in the form of Tim Burton's Headless Horseman thriller Sleepy Hollow. Co-starring as Johnny Depp's love interest, Ricci owned her role as Katrina Van Tassel, winning a bunch of awards and catapulting her headfirst into the '00s.
Since 2000 you've seen her in other classics such as Prozac Nation, Alley McBeal, New York, I Love You, Saving Grace, Pan Am and The Lizzie Borden Chronicles.
