First came the Purge (trapped in a house with a group of purgers breaking in to get what they believe belongs to them) then Anarchy (running wild on through the streets with nowhere to hide and barely anyone to trust); now, Universal has released the trailer for the newest installment- The Purge: Election Year.
The masks get creepier and those partaking in the purge are more dangerous than ever, let's take a look at the trailer.
I don't know about you guys, but I am pretty excited about this film, and here is why you should be too.
The Director- James DeMonaco
If you are a fan of the previous two Purge films, DeMonaco's name probably sounds familiar; he is the man behind them as well. He has returned to write and direct The Purge: Election Year, and having done the first two, he knows what the fans want to see and will most likely make the third installment even crazier.
Even more important than who is behind the camera, is who's in front of it. There is one familiar face that can be seen, Frank Grillo, who fans know from The Purge: Anarchy. Grillo is a natural in roles like this one, he's a born, Bond-like bad-ass. We all know that a film cannot succeed with just one person, and the other names on the Purge roster are just as impressive as Grillo's.
Everyone has seen the 1994 classic Forrest Gump, and we all remember Forrest's war buddy Bubba. The man behind that amazing character, Mykelti Williamson, is also set to get his Purge on. The cast also includes Elizabeth Mitchell (Once Upon a Time) and Raymond J. Barry (LA Apocalypse).
Here is the plot as it reads on the film's IMDB page:
Two years after choosing not to kill the man who killed his son, former police sergeant Barnes has become head of security for Senator Charlene Roan, the front runner in the next Presidential election due to her vow to eliminate the Purge.
The Purge: Election Year is going to be unlike either of the other films (besides the purging), and for me, that makes this one even more exciting. It will make the film even better to throw in someone on the opposing side of the purge and only add to the already savage nature of the film. Those that have seen the other two films know that those trying to purge do not like when others get in their way. I think the body count will be larger, the kills will be more brutal and the action level will be even higher.
A big (and possibly creepiest) part of The Purge films is without a doubt the masks worn by those partaking in the event. In the first film, we saw some creepy, doll-like masks, and Anarchy brought some slightly more creepy masks (the white face and the giant mouth). From just the trailer, it appears as though the costume department on Election Year are not pulling any punches when it comes to the creepiness of the masks we will see. The one in the picture above looks like something straight out of a Creepypasta story. There is also a brief glimpse on the security camera footage of animal-like masks similar to those worn in You're Next. The creepiest one however has to be the light-up Statue of Liberty mask. The symbol of freedom covered in blood with LED scratched out eyes and the mouth sewn shut is kind of terrifying.
Are you excited now? I for one cannot wait to see this film after just the first trailer release. I know some of you doubters may be thinking "all of the good parts are in the trailer", and I said that about the last film, but I was proven wrong. According to the film's IMDB page, it is set for release on July 1st.
