This second trailer for The Huntsman: Winter’s War is interesting for a few reason. First of all, it comes right out and says that it’s a prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman. On one hand, anything to tie it into a known entity. On the other hand, it’s amusing they flat-out admit that they screwed Kristen Stewart out of her own franchise (before said movie even opened). Granted, she’s doing pretty well for herself these day, but considering Chris Hemsworth has little drawing power on his own it’s a darn lucky thing that Universal/Comcast Corp. saw fit to surround him with three of the more famous (and potentially bankable) actresses in Hollywood right now, namely Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, and Jessica Chastain.
Yet even if this film is a huge hit, it’s doubtful that any of those three will get action fantasy franchises of their own to lead. Heck, Emily Blunt powered Sicario to $45 million and they still wanted to throw her out of a theoretical sequel before the film even opened. Anyway, the first trailer seemed to indicate that this was a prequel/sequel with portions taking place before and after Snow White and the Huntsman. So we’ll see to what extent that is correct, as well as if Jessica Chastain gets fridged at some point as the would-be wife that Hemsworth was trying to resurrect in the first film.
This looks like a lot of very silly funny, and the fact that Emily Blunt is basically playing Elsa from Frozen is just a goofy bonus. The Huntsman: Winter’s War arrives on April 20th courtesy of Universal/Comcast Corp. As always, we’ll see, but I’m ready to enjoy this one if the occasion arises.
