With just over a month before the release of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", the final trailer for the film has been released and with the trailer, I'm sure it has us all asking the same question: Why the hell didn't they release THIS trailer back in December?!
As you may or may not know, I very much disliked the trailer that was released late last year, the one which basically spoils the entire movie and doesn't even seem to advertise a Batman vs Superman movie. The whole trailer just felt like DC couldn't wait to show us that it's basically a Justice League setup film and we were left with a badly marketed product, annoying Jesse Eisenberg and Doomsday with face herpes all in one package. But now we have a trailer that works perfect in advertising this film.
The trailer starts out with Batman inside a building laying waste to a large group of men. The way the fight plays out feels like something straight out of one of the "Batman: Arkham" video games. It's brutal, fast paced, and ends with Batman possibly crippling a guy for life. (He said he doesn't kill, he never said anything about turning people into paraplegics) This scene alone shows us that we're getting a new take on the Batman that we've never seen, showcasing classic Batman moments such as the brutal fighting and even dry humor and interaction with Alfred.
After that, this entire trailer turns into one giant montage of the stuff we all want to see. The conflict between Batman and Superman is the main focus and it's excellent. Visually, this movie already looks great, showing that Zack Snyder, love him or hate him, is a talented visual director who can make terrific looking scenery. It's not just visual stuff, however, as we also get an epic show of fighting and...that's pretty much it. But in all honesty, that's really all you need to see in a trailer like this. Sure, it's nice that they're giving us a look at the characters motivations, but in a movie with a title like this, we're not exactly watching it for a political debate between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel.
Call me an asshole all you want, but it's also nice to see that we're not given much new stuff of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. From the initial casting of him, I wasn't sold on it and I still have yet to see anything that'll convince that he's going to be good in this role. At this point, I'm just going to watch the movie with an open mind and hope that he delivers a good performance, but it's still disheartening that none of the trailers have proven me wrong on Eisenberg playing this iconic villain.
At the very end of this epic montage of ass-kicking, we get the best part in the trailer, Batman actually blocking Superman's punch and most likely making Superman super-shit his pants. You can tell just by the look in Superman's face that he hasn't had anyone physically challenge him like this since General Zod, and now he realizes that Batman won't be someone he can take down so easily. This is going to be a genuinely tough opponent to face in Batman and that final shot conveys it perfectly.
Simply put, this trailer was a huge improvement over the last one and now I'm glad that this final trailer seems to be marketing the movie as what it should be. No Doomsday, very little Wonder Woman, just an all out battle between the two titular heroes. This movie may have just jumped on my list for the most anticipated films of 2016 and for that reason alone, this trailer earns the title of epic.
