So, this is it. After all the build up and excitement of the various [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) teasers and promos which have dropped over the past few months we arrive at the self proclaimed "Final Trailer" for the superhero blockbuster showdown, set to arrive in theatres March 25, 2016.
In case you've missed it somehow here it is below in all its glory, we think it might be the most exciting one yet (and not just because Jeremy Iron's Alfred is sassy af).
When Ben Affleck was first announced to be the next actor stepping into Batman's legendary cowl it's safe to say that the reaction was... mixed. But the actor/character combo affectionally known as Batfleck has gone on to smash our expectations, and it's looking like he's really got The Dark Knight Returns era Bruce Wayne / Batman down.
Perhap the most exciting thing about this new trailer is that it's the first time that we've really got to see Ben Affleck's Batman in motion - doing his Batman thing - as opposed to rubbing up against Henry Cavill's permanently constipated looking Superman. The entire opening scene chronicles Batman taking on the bad guys, and damn if he doesn't look pretty fluid whilst he's at it, moving in a fighting style which recalls the Arkham series of Batman video games.
Again we have the image of Superman as a controversial figure of god-like power and authority pushed, and the line from Bruce Wayne's teaser clip repeated:
"He has the power to wipe out the entire human race and if we believe there is even a 1% chance that he's our enemy we have to take it as an absolute certainty."
Batman's meaning here is clear. Superman / Clark Kent is so powerful that if there's even the smallest chance that he could pose a threat to the world he has to be taken out. One life - and an alien life at that - for the good of the world.
As we've been shown in the previous clips and promo materials, Bruce Wayne has a very intense (and understandable) reaction towards Superman after the massive damage caused to Metropolis during the climactic battle in Man of Steel, which prompts his campaign to bring down Superman. But as Alfred warned him in the first trailer, "That's how it starts. The fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that turns good men cruel".
This teases perhaps the most complex Batman we've seen on screen yet. Sure, the Nolan era Batman as portrayed by Christian Bale certainly had more than his fair share of emotional baggage; but here we have a broken Bruce Wayne, "getting slow in [his] old age" and fractured by the loss of Robin (presumably the Jason Todd Robin). His intense dislike of Superman seems less like a knee jerk reaction and more like a neurosis born from a lifetime of losing those closest to him.
The trailers thus far certainly do seem to be setting up Batman more as a relatable protagonist - comparatively Superman / Clark Kent has much fewer lines than most, and considerably less than Batman in particular. Though this is likely partly due to the fact that Batman v Superman serves as our introduction to the DCEU Batman whereas Superman has already had his first feature outing in the polarising Man of Steel.
But Batman isn't the only great thing about the new trailer; we also get to see more of the interplay between Bruce and Alfred, not to mention the first spoken dialogue from Gal Gadot's massively anticipated Wonder Woman and more of Jesse Eisenberg's wonderfully creepy Lex Luthor.
If we weren't already excited for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice then this new one has certaintly gotten our blood going. And thankfully it's not long now until we'll get to see the movie in all its glory, with the superhero showdown opening March 25, 2016.
