Whatever Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool marketing team have been doing for the past few months has clearly been working. You can't walk five paces without finding that "Merc with a Mouth" practically anywhere and everywhere.
Last night, Deadpool hit theaters and it grossed $12.7 million at 2,975 locations. This is a record number for R-rated films released on a Thursday night. By comparison, The Hangover Part II grossed $10.4 million, which Deadpool easily eclipsed.
Fox's Deadpool made $2.3 million from IMAX showings on Thursday and is expected to bring in as much as $70 million over Presidents' Weekend. It is predicted to make between $60-$65 million.
A year ago, Fifty Shades Of Grey hit Presidents' Weekend and raked in $93 million. With an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadpool will be a close second to Fifty Shades. It has also pulled in $3.4 million in the UK, making it the fifth-highest-grossing opening day for a Marvel movie.
Some people might have found Deadpool's takeover a bit much, but that suggests they completely missed the point; that is the character Deadpool's MO. And I don't think it would be Deadpool if it were done in any other fashion.
