With reboots and remakes already huge in Hollywood, studios have begun a new trend: making the original male leads female, also known as 'gender bending'. Along with Sandra Bullock’s attempt with Ocean's Eleven, Ghostbusters will be getting a brand new squad, all in the form of America’s most beloved comediennes as Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate Mckinnon will all be sporting the jumpsuit and picking up their vacuums.
The plot seems to stay relatively close to the original, with Mccarthy and Wiig playing authors who are laughed out of their jobs when they write a book confirming the existence of ghosts. When ghosts start to materialize, they try to get their reputation back by teaming up with Jones and Mckinnon to take on the supernatural.
While this film has been the talk of the town for a few months, there hasn’t been any footage, except a couple pictures of the squad (above). Luckily, that all changed on Valentine’s Day when the studios released a teaser for the trailer, which will be released in March. The timing of this announcement is actually quite perfect because in the 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters 2, Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) was told that the world would end on February 14th, 2016. Thankfully, we all survived to see this trailer.
The announcement is a short 28 second teaser that doesn’t really tell us anything, except that the police and military combined aren’t enough to take on a couple of ghosts. With glimpses of police cars and soldiers, the phrase “Who you gonna call” appears with the famous symbol. At the very end, it said the trailer will be premiering on March 3rd, 2016.
The tone of the trailer was actually quite surprising. The film was advertised as a comedy, but the trailer didn’t signify that at all. It felt like it was supposed to be a gritty science fiction film like War of the Worlds or Independence Day. But with Paul Feig on board to direct, it most likely won’t go down that route, but it was still an odd choice to introduce the film with this type of atmosphere. We’ll just have to wait and see on March 3rd if this film will be any good.
