You'd think the good folks over at The Pokémon Company and Game Freak would be running a little low on ideas at this juncture, wouldn't you? With 721 recorded Pokémon in the mythos and counting it's understandable if their creative juices are running a little low. After all, we're talking about the series which brought us such abominations as Luvdisc, Probopass, and Klinklang amongst many other strange and awful designs.
But apparently there's still some creative spark left in the machine, as a new Mythical Pokémon has just been unveiled by Pokémon.com. Gird yourself, and say hello to Magearna.
First seen on the cover of March's edition of Japan's CoroCoro Magazine, Magearna is certainly... interesting looking. I swear those eyes can see right into the depths of your soul, and they aren't impressed with what they've found there.
Here's its height and weight stats according to the Pokémon website:
Category: Artificial Pokémon
Weight: 177.5 lbs.
So Magearna is a Mythical Pokémon — also known as a Mirage Pokémon — which means that it's an incredibly rare Pokémon, the existence of which is still debated by researchers in the Pokémon world. Not by us though, we know better.
Given that it's a Mythical this also means that, regardless of appearances in the anime and any upcoming films (we'll get to that), we won't be able to catch it in the wild in the upcoming Pokemon Z. Mythical Pokémon are usually only available via Nintendo's Pokémon events and giveaways, or game "hacks" (Mew being the earliest and most widely known example of such).
While the creation of life brewed in labs and created via advanced technology is still a sci-fi facet belonging to the distant future in our reality, the same cannot be said for that of the fictional world of Pokémon. The first generation Legendary Mewtwo is perhaps the best example of an artificially created Pokémon, the living result of gene splicing experiments using the DNA of Mew.
Why is this important? Because not only is Magearna Mythical, it's also an Artificial Pokémon. This means it was created by humans rather than evolving naturally in the wild like the majority of the pocket monsters did. Take that Darwin!
So the artificially created Magearna is composed entirely of metal and was created 500 years ago, for whatever reason. Presumably we'll find out why later this year, because the new Mythical Pokémon is set to appear first in...
2016's Pokémon Movie
Yep, Magearna is set to make its first appearance in the next Pokémon movie, which is due out sometime later this year. Here's the official synopsis of the upcoming film via Pokémon.com:
In this latest cinematic adventure, Ash meets the Mythical Pokémon Volcanion when it crashes down from the sky, creating a cloud of dust —and a mysterious force binds the two of them together! Volcanion despises humans and tries to get away, but it's forced to drag Ash along as it continues its rescue mission. They arrive in a city of cogs and gears, where a corrupt minister has stolen the ultimate invention: the Artificial Pokémon Magearna, created 500 years ago. He plans to use its mysterious power to take control of this mechanical kingdom! Can Ash and Volcanion work together to rescue Magearna? One of the greatest battles in Pokémon history is about to unfold!
So, it looks like we're going to be seeing not just one but two Mythical Pokémon when the new movie rolls around. What a time to be alive.
