The next chapter in the Resident Evil franchise is fast approaching and is set to take the series in a new direction with its tactical squad-based multiplayer action. Umbrella Corps appears to have taken a cue from Rainbow Six, similarly allowing players to switch between an over the shoulder third-person perspective and up close and personal first-person shooting.
The game takes you on a tour through the nefarious Umbrella Corporation's storied history, dropping opposing teams back into recognizable areas they've previously rained undead terror upon. This new trailer shows off Resident Evil 4's iconic village area, though this time therre's no sack-headed chainsaw psychos in sight:
As you can see from the closing teaser, we'll also be heading back to the fifth game's shantytown Kijuju. Capcom confirmed the map's resurrection on their blog:
Kijuju will be a new battle zone that is also the biggest map in the game, with plenty of open areas and webbed underground passages to keep things interesting.
If you're not a team player then Umbrella Corps' solo challenge mode, ominously titled 'The Experiment', will have brave lone wolves fighting for survival in a 'Research Battle Colosseum.' You've gotta love Umbrella's knack for naming their facilities.
Tapping into the Umbrella's shady past is a great excuse to return to the franchise's most iconic locations, but it won't simply be a bland retreading of familiar events. In fact, the game's story is set to reveal information previously covered up:
The game is set in 2015, two years after the events of Resident Evil 6 and twelve years after the collapse of the Umbrella Corporation in 2003. Although the Umbrella Corporation has been disbanded, a great deal of valuable viral BOW research information leftover from their past evil endeavors and is still left to be discovered.
I can't wait to start digging into the corporation's dark secrets. Umbrella Corps is due for release on PS4 and PC in May.
