Earlier this week we received some amazing news from LucasFilm about the 8th Star Wars movie. Not only has the film officially started production, but we also learned that three new actors have won roles in the highly anticipated movie. Benicio del Toro, who is well known for playing The Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has long been rumored to play a new villain. This would make sense, considering Kylo Ren will be finishing his dark training with Supreme Leader Snoke as was stated at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Also, the rumored new female role went to Kelly Marie Tran, a relative newcomer having only appeared in a handful of web-series and YouTube videos.
The one casting that wasn't really rumored or talked about before the announcement is the female character that is going to be played by Laura Dern. You may not recognize the name, but I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.
Laura's most famous role was as Ellie Sattler in the original Jurassic Park. She really hasn't been in much lately, but being in a Star Wars movie as well as Jurassic Park makes her nerd celebrity royalty. The real question now is, who will she be playing?
Lots of famous people were in The Force Awakens and had small if not bit roles in the film, so why is Laura Stern's casting any different? Her age. If the role was for a stormtrooper or rebel pilot, it would have gone to a contemporary of Oscar Isaacs, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. Laura Dern is closer in age to the classic characters like Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (Carrie Fisher).
Couldn't she be playing a villain like del Toro? That is a possibility. However, that gives the First Order 6 big villains to juggle, plus their army of Storm-Troopers. Yes she could be a villain, but to me it seems unlikely, considering the fact that Captain Phasma will also have an increased role. They wouldn't want to take away from a character like Phasma, who's become wildly popular despite her very minor role in TFA.
I do have a theory, however, of who she'll be playing.
This Could Possibly Be A Small Spoiler. Who Knows At This Point. But Just In Case, Here's Your Warning.
One question that is likely to be answered in Episode 8 is who Rey's family is. Who are the parents that left her on Jakku? She will almost definitely come through the Skywalker line considering that LucasFilm head Kathleen Kennedy said the main episodes would follow the Skywalker family. That leaves Rey two legitimate options:
- She is the daughter of Han and Leia (and the sister of Kylo Ren)
- She is the daughter of Luke and an unknown woman (and the cousin of Kylo)
I'm personally still hoping she will be the sister of Kylo, considering all of her interaction with Han, who would be her dad, during TFA. However, Laura Dern's casting gives more credit to the Luke theory though. What if Laura will play Rey's mother in the movie? Now that she's found Luke, who would be her father, she will no doubt want to see her mother. Maybe Laura's character will also be a Jedi trained by Luke who could help in the training of Rey. Maybe Laura will play Mara Jade, who was Luke's wife in the expanded universe. Either way it seems likely to me that Laura Dern will play Rey's mother in the eighth movie. I could be completely wrong, but it seems like a very strong possibility.
