Intruder alert! What the hell was Marvel's Hydra Bob doing in the X universe of Deadpool?
During the climactic battle scene of the record-breaking film, Wade Wilson bumps into none other than Bob (Rob Hayter). They have a brief chat about Bob's wife, as you do in a combat scene. Needless to say, this cameo was an incredible treat for fans of the comic.
Bob has a slightly shortened name to avoid outright copyright infringement. But that's not to say that the use of Deadpool's old sidekick was entirely legal...
20th Century Fox should not technically include Hydra Bob because Marvel owns the rights to the evil organization Hydra, of which Bob is a member.
Screenwriter Paul Wernick reasoned to Cinema Blend:
"That’s why he’s just called Bob. The hardcore fans will go, ‘Oh my God, is that Hydra Bob?’ but the lawyers at Marvel won’t go, ‘Wait, that’s Hydra Bob, they don’t have the rights to it.’ We did take some liberties.
Fox has a list of characters that they own and that we can use, and Simon Kinberg, who is a producer on the project, is the keeper of the X universe. So he was a great source for us in knowing what we can use, how it’s going to play into the larger story, and overall arching stories of the X universe.
So between Simon and legal, they kind of guided us to what we can and can’t do or have access to, and then it was up to us to see how we were going to use those characters creatively, once we knew we really did have the rights."
So, in true Deadpool style, they did something not entirely appropriate.
Those sly 20th Century Fox-es!
Deadpool is the studio's eighth movie in the X-Men film series. It scored their highest-grossing opening weekend ever.
Bob previously met Deadpool in the comics when he was coerced by the Merc with a Mouth, despite him only being four inches tall, into helping him to rescue the capture United States of America from Hydra. Bob later became a part of Agency X, where he was often referred to as Deadpool's "Minion."
