There certainly aren't many first-time movie directors that can boast a success like the record-breaking Deadpool. Yes, the tale of the Merc with a Mouth was 50-year-old Tim Miller's first ever feature film, one which has gone on to win 20th Century Fox's biggest opening weekend ever.
So how did he end up working on what was going to be such a radical breakthrough in his directing career? Miller's first venture was founding a visual effects and animation studio called Blur in 1995, where he co-directed the Oscar-nominated animated short film Gopher Broke (it's on Youtube and it's adorable).
But what apparently tickled 20th Century Fox's fancy was this gorgeous cinematic trailer Miller directed for DC Universe Online, a free-to-play massive multiplayer online (MMO) action game. Players can pick the hero or the villain team and fight alongside the metahumans.
In the powerful six minute trailer, we see a gang of supervillains led by Lex Luthor, including the Joker and Harley Quinn, fight and defeat the world's most loved superheroes. But Brainiac abuses the chaos in order to take over, so Lex Luthor travels back in time to warn Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and co. of the impending doom. It's got the action, the drama, and the end of the world, so we can see how this trailer impressed the Fox executives.
