What was your game of 2015? It was an exceptional year for the art form for sure, with The Witcher 3 ultimately claiming the top prize at The Game Awards. Personally, I adored Bloodborne and I've played it so many times since it was released on March 24th of last year. But what will take that spot in 2016? I may have already found it.
At The Game Awards, No Man's Sky received the Most Anticipated Game award for this year. Everyone is dying to see how Hello Games' fascinating idea actually plays on PS4 and eventually PC. But can it claim Game of the Year from a true modern masterpiece?
Can No Man's Sky Take The Game of the Year Award From XCOM 2?
I'm not a strategy gamer, in fact, I've avoided the genre on many occasions. But I recall picking up XCOM: Enemy Unknown in a relatively slow release period, as its reviews certainly peaked my interest. As it turned out, XCOM: Enemy Unknown became one of my favorite games of all time. And I say 'was' because Firaxis just released an unbelievable sequel.
XCOM 2 won't be comparable with No Man's Sky - they exist in polar opposite genres. But Game of the Year has to be clenched by someone, and if XCOM 2 was released in 2015 I may have named it my number one over From Software's modern masterpiece.
The strategy required when playing XCOM 2 is immense. Careful planning is always required and if your ideas pay off it can be one of the most rewarding experiences in gaming. The sight of permanently losing a soldier you trained from the beginning is shocking, landing a shot that had a 30% chance of connecting is life-affirming and carefully managing your base against the alien onslaught is beyond addictive.
Can Another Release Date Top This?
From where I'm sitting, Game of the Year just arrived. After all, it's just kicked XCOM: Enemy Unknown off my top 5 list. But I'm optimistic when it comes to Hello Games' [No Man's Sky](tag:2684052). They've captured the imagination and undivided attention of the gaming community since it was unveiled. We're all fascinated by it and I really have no idea what it'll be like to play it.
Though it's unfair to already call a Game of the Year (I mean, it's February for god sake) especially with a year that's set to release [Mass Effect: Andromeda](tag:2683449), [Deus Ex: Mankind Divided](tag:3677367), Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian, Quantum Break, Dark Souls 3 and so much more, I can't help it. X-COM 2 is a masterpiece and you won't understand my standpoint until you play it. It's worth every second you invest.
