Star Trek Beyond will be released in July of this year, and there's plenty of reasons to be excited about the film. After the trailer dropped (to a mixed reception), Simon Pegg assured fans that Beyond will boldly go back to what made the franchise great, with a thought-provoking plot and "the spirit of adventure".
The film's release coincides with Star Trek's 50th anniversary, and apparently Beyond has incorporated plenty of homages to Trek's history in order to honour that. And one blast from the past has been revealed...
Sulu's Daughter Will Appear!
Hikaru Sulu's daughter, Demora, first appeared in the 1994 movie Star Trek: Generations.
"Congratulations ensign, it wouldn't be the Enterprise without a Sulu at the helm." - James T Kirk, Generations
Demora followed in her father's footsteps, joining Starfleet Academy and specialising in flight operations. She was assigned to the Enterprise-B after graduating, taking up the role of helmsman. Demora appeared in Generations as well as several Star Trek comics and novels, which explored her Starfleet career.
Interestingly, Demora Sulu's story provides a link to Deep Space 9 in the novel Forged In Fire: on a diplomatic mission during which she meets Curzon Dax, Demora is poisoned by the Klingon pirate known as The Albino, but ultimately survives the attack. Three Klingon children die from the poison, and Dax's mission to avenge them is the plot of the DS9 episode Blood Oath.
Because of the time setting, Demora Sulu is little more than a child in Star Trek Beyond. But this actually goes a long way to heal some of the problems Hikaru and Demora had in the Prime Timeline...
Changing The Past
John Cho (who plays Hikaru Sulu) explained to Entertainment Tonight how Sulu misses his daughter...
"At the beginning of the movie, we're all homesick, we're all getting into our ruts and I think we've been around each other too long. Sulu has a heartache for his little baby. He brought his picture to his console, which technically, we've been saying, is unprofessional. It's in the way of the buttons."
This adds a nice element of family to Star Trek Beyond, and it'll be interesting to discover whether Sulu has a wife and family back home on Earth.
But it looks like Demora isn't just going to make a quick cameo in a photograph: John Cho hinted that her role has a small significance in the plot of Beyond.
"There is another revelation that you'll find out, in regards to this baby... but you'll have to wait to see the movie!"
In the Prime Timeline, Sulu didn't even meet his child until she was 6 years old. This was mainly because Sulu was serving as captain of the Excelsior at the time, and wasn't granted much shore leave to see his family. Because of his absence in her early life, Demora harboured some resentment towards her father, though they were eventually able to heal their relationship.
So far, it seems as though Sulu's mission on the Enterprise is also keeping him from spending time with his daughter, but they already seem to be much closer than they were in the Prime Timeline.
This is all we know so far about Demora in Star Trek Beyond, but I'm definitely intrigued by this "revelation" about her in the film. Other than that though, it's good to know that Beyond really will incorporate elements from Trek's history, as much as it forges ahead into a new story.
