According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is in talk with The Devil Wears Prada actress Emily Blunt to star as the singing nanny Mary Poppins. The news broke last September that Disney were developing another film featuring the beloved character that Julie Andrews brought to life in 1964. It is most certainly a controversial move on Disney's part, considering how beloved the character and Andrew's portrayal is.
Earlier reports have suggested that the film will be a sequel to the classic 1964 film as a opposed to a remake. Rob Marshall will be directing the new currently untitled movie, which will be set approximately 20 years after the tale in the first film that starred Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke. It will also use material from the book series that P.L. Travers wrote.
After the original news broke about a new Mary Poppins movie, Blunt’s name was among the candidates that fans wanted to star as the singing nanny, but it is the more recent reports suggest that Blunt could be the star. Other names that surfaced as possible candidates were Anne Hathaway, Lea Michele and Anna Kendrick.
Marshall is producing with Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be composing original songs and an all-new score. David Magee is attached to write the screenplay.
