A sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 futuristic thriller has been long-waited for quite some time now, and will finally start principal photography this summer. On the other hand, the John Wick sequel, which will now be called John Wick: Chapter Two, has already started filming.
Scott has already helped develop a script and and the plot for the Blade Runner sequel with the help of the original film's screenwriters Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, who also helped Scott with the screenplay for Alien: Covenant. Scott won't be sitting in the directors chair this time around for the futuristic thriller sequel, but will give the reigns to Denis Villeneuve, who directed Prisoners and Sicario. John Wick: Chapter Two will be bringing back most of it's crew behind the camera from the first film including director Chad Stahelski and screenwriter Derek Kolstad.
But the big news is that both films officially have release dates! Lionsgate has officially announced that John Wick: Chapter 2 will hit theaters on February 10, 2017, which seems like a great spot to put an R-Rated action/thriller near Valentine's Day. The sequel is set to face off against the erotic, romantic drama Fifty Shades Darker, and the family-friendly action/comedy and LEGO Movie spinoff, The LEGO Batman Movie. On the other side, Alcon Entertainment has officially announced that Blade Runner 2 will release on an unclaimed date of January 12th, 2018 in the U.S.
Although John Wick: Chapter 2 started filming late 2015, Lionsgate has a full slate of films that will be arriving in 2016, so 2017 seemed like the perfect spot for it. John Wick was a huge surprise in 2014 and saw great success at the box office. Having a February release date may seem like an amazing idea, but it's going against future hard hitters, so it won't have major box office success without a fight. It's likely that Deadpool made a huge impact on Lionsgate's decision to release an R-Rated action film in February.
Returning with Reeves for the sequel are Lance Reddick (Hotel Manager Charon), and Bridget Moynahan (John's deceased wife Helen), and Ian McShane (Winston). New cast members joining are Common (Run All Night), Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black), Peter Stormare (22 Jump Street), and Reeves' The Matrix costar, Laurence Fishburne.
“In the follow up to last year’s adrenaline-fueled revenge and redemption thriller, legendary hit man John Wick is back.”
Blade Runner 2 will have Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard and Ryan Gosling is officially on board. The sequel is coming out in January, which isn't when most summer blockbusters are released. Most film studios are just putting huge movies all year long instead of carefully plotting them in the summertime where it's mostly clogged.
John Wick and Blade Runner 2 are stepping away from the Hollywood hard hitters such as Star Wars and all superhero films to compete against earlier films in the two years, but could do very well on their chosen dates. We just have to wait until they release to find out. Both sequels are happening and have release dates and that's the best news anyone can get.
John Wick: Chapter Two is set to open in U.S. theaters on February 10th, 2017, followed by Blade Runner 2 on January 12th, 2018.
