What is it about the recent trend in superhero movies that has seen their appeal skyrocket through the roof? It's true that there is a lot to like about these films, including all the action, drama, romance, fantasy and suspense, to name a few.

Under all the latex and special effects, there is one person that has the potential to turn an ordinary, run-of-the-mill superhero movie into a multibillion dollar blockbuster – the actors who portray them. So let's take a look under the latex and lycra of some of your favorite superheroes. Not only that, but let's go back in time to see what they looked like before they could even talk!

Below you will find a selection of photos of your favorite superheroes, along with some clues about their identity.

1. Could this actor be on the phone to Commissioner Gordon?

This actor was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky.

He rose to fame playing a doctor in various TV shows and films, including Murphy Brown (1988–1998), Friends (1994–2004), a TV series which ran between 1994-2009 and South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (1999).

He was previously married to actress Talia Balsam between 1989 and 1993.

In 1996, he teamed up with actor/director Quentin Tarantino to sleigh some vampires.

In 1998 he was nominated for a Razzie Award for 'Worst Screen Couple' alongside his superhero sidekick Chris O'Donnell.

In March 2012, he was arrested after a protest outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington.

Despite this, he has been nominated for six Oscars, winning two of them. One Academy Award was won in 2006 for 'Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role' for Syriana (2005), and his second win came in 2013 for 'Best Motion Picture of the Year' for Argo (2012).

Born on October 23, 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, this actor once failed his drama class in high school.

He turned down the role of Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), which went to Nicholas Brendon.

The actor has starred in three Marvel movies (these occurred in 2016, 2009 and 2004).

The actor was named the 'Sexiest Man Alive' by People magazine in 2010.

He expressed great interest in playing the character 'The Flash,' if a film adaptation of the comic book should ever occur. However, he did not portray this superhero on the small screen.

This actor had to put on 25 pounds of muscle for his role as 'Hannibal King' in a film based on an American comic published by Marvel.

In June 2004, he announced his engagement to his then girlfriend of two years, Canadian singer Alanis Morissette.

One of his acting credits include the TV series 90210 (2008–2013).

In 2014, he landed a major role in the independent film Affluenza.

The actor said that he has a Superman tattoo, although this is not the superhero that he portrays on the small screen.

For his starring turn as a superhero, he has won a Teen Choice Award for 'Breakout Star' and a Saturn Award for 'Breakthrough Performance'.

Despite being known for playing this superhero in his own TV series which started in 2014, he has reprized this character in Superhero Fight Club (2015) and the TV series' Supergirl (2015– ) Vixen (2015– ) and Arrow (2012– ).

He is the older brother of an actor who was nominated for an Oscar for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007).

In 2002, he was voted 'Most Eligible Bachelor' by People Magazine. The same year saw the actor named People Magazine's 'Sexiest Man Alive'.

He has directed 3 different actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Amy Ryan, Jeremy Renner, and Alan Arkin.

In 2004, he won two Razzie Awards. One of these was for 'Worst Actor,' after portraying a superhero, and the other one was for 'Worst Screen Couple,' opposite his then girlfriend Jennifer Lopez.

This actor was born on May 5, 1983 in Jersey, in the Channel Islands.

This actor has become the first non-American actor to play this superhero on the big screen.

For his superhero role, he had to adhere to a strict work-out regime, which consisted of consuming 5000 calories a day for six months.

Despite being involved in sports when he was younger, this star was bullied a lot at school for being overweight and chubby.

In 2013, he was ranked number one 'Sexiest Man' by Glamour Magazine.

Apparently, the actor was once in contention for the role of James Bond in Casino Royale (2006), and got through to a final screen test. Unfortunately, he was deemed to be to young for the part, and Daniel Craig was eventually cast.

Further down the line, the actor was also considered, and ultimately auditioned, for the role of Superman in Superman Returns (2006), a part that was eventually given to Brandon Routh.

With all this bad luck, Empire Magazine named this actor 'The most unlucky man in Hollywood' in December 2005.

Twilight Author Stephanie Meyer based the description of Edward Cullen in her novels on this actor. She even went on to lobby for the star to play the role before Robert Pattinson was cast.

In 2014, he won an MTV Movie Award for 'Best Hero' that he portrays on the big screen.

For his superhero role, he had to dye his hair black.

This young star was born on October 12, 1968, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The star met his future wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, when they co-starred together in the Australian TV series Correlli (1995).

In 2008, he was voted 'Sexiest Man Alive' by People Magazine.

As of 2015, this actor has played the same comic book character in seven films, which is more times than any other actor.

He has been offered various roles based on comic books, including Iron Man (2008), Jonathan Kent in Superman Returns (2006), Mr. Fantastic in Fantastic Four (2005), Daredevil (2003) and Hulk (2003).

The superhero role that he is known for was originally given to Dougray Scott. However, the shooting of Mission: Impossible II (2000) went over by two months so this actor was cast instead.

The actor stands at 6'2", but the superhero he plays, according to the comic books, only stands at 5' 3".

When he was growing up, he became good friends with Leonardo DiCaprio after they met on several occasions while auditioning for the same role.

He has two children named Ruby Sweetheart and Otis.

PETA declared him the 'World's Sexiest Vegetarian' in 2002, due to his commitment to being a vegetarian since 1992.

The actor has reprized his superhero role in a trilogy of films.

The star has two half-brothers called Jopaul and Weston Epp. Incidentally, the pair featured in the second of the three movies, where they hand our superhero his mask after a certain train scene.

On September 3, 2007, he married Jennifer Meyer, with whom he has two children.

He made his acting debut at the tender age of five in the film Pound (1970).

In the early 1980s, he shared a room with fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland.

The star claims that his father was the one who introduced him to drugs when he offered him a marijuana joint when he was only 8 years old.
