Independence Day was-and still is-the best sci-fi action movie ever! It was a beautifully woven and emotionally driven action film about alien invasion and people of all colors coming together to fight to save Earth. It challenged how we treated one another and made us wonder about life in outer space. It gave us a sense of patriotic unity, provided us with amazing action scenes, and even gave us a sweet love story! What other movie do you know that shows us that a stripper and a military fighter pilot can get married and be happy? According to Cinemablend, Jessie Usher has been cast as Captain Hiller's stepson, Dylan Hiller in Independence Day: Resurgence! Let's see who he is and how he feels about getting this amazing role!

Who is Jessie Usher?

Jessie Usher is a 24-year-old actor who had his first breakout role in the 2014 Starz half-hour comedy series, Survivor’s Remorse. He plays Cameron Calloway, a star basketball player whose life changes when he signs a multi-million dollar contract with the NBA in Atlanta. He struggles with helping his needy family and friends while juggling love and stardom. Jessie also played avid video gamer Lyle in the 2012 television series, Level Up, where he and his friends opened various game portals to the real world! They fight against game villains while trying to maintain normal teenage lives. Jessie is no stranger to the small screen, but will he be able to keep pull off being the next action movie star on the big screen?

What Role Does Jessie Play in Independence Day: Resurgence?

Jessie is excited and extremely humbled to receive Will Smith's blessing to play Dylan Hiller, the shared son of Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica Fox). At this point, it is 20 years into the future. It’s a post-alien attack world where humans have been using the alien technology to unionize and prepare for the next alien attack. Dylan is following his father’s footsteps by joining the military and becoming a fighter pilot. According to Blackfilm, Vivica Fox said that Jessie “has all the wonderful qualities that will remind audiences of Will.” As far as her character goes, Jasmine has outgrown her stripper days. She will be a hospital administrator who runs a hospital. Fox is glad that they moved the character forward as a woman.

Where’s Will Smith?

Fans of the first film were devastated to hear the news that Will Smith was not reprising his role as Steven Hiller. The reason was because Fox Studios refused to meet his request for a $50 million salary for two sequels. In June of 2010, it was confirmed by director Roland Emmerich that Jeff Goldblum will be returning to play David Levinson. The sequel won't be the same without Will Smith, who basically made the 1999 movie the huge success that it was. Captain Hiller made serious situations comical, inspired the world with his bravery and excellent flying skills, and succeeded in saving the world when he was our last hope! Let's just pray that Jessie Usher has what it takes as an actor because he has big shoes to fill.

'It has also been revealed how Smith's character will be written out of the sequel.' While Colonel Hiller was test piloting the Employee Security Divisions's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction caused his untimely death. Hiller’s valor in the War of 96’ made him a beloved global icon whose selflessness and bravery against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s demise. He was survived by his wife Jasmine and his son Dylan. Fans of Independence Day have waited too long to see the sequel but we weren’t ready for Will Smith to be missing in action. Let's take a moment of silence for our fallen hero as we watch a flashback clip of Independence Day.

The Fourth of July Was Never the Same

Every man, woman, and child was inspired and moved when Bill Pullman as President said those famous words, “The Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday but the day that the world declared in one voice, ‘We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!’”

Every time I watch it, it is like I’m watching it for the first time. Reliving that iconic movie moment made me overjoyed to hear that they finally got around to making the sequel. Check out the trailer to see if it was worth the wait.

What Took Them So Long to Make the Sequel?

Soon after the success of the first film, 20th Century Fox offered screenwriter Dean Devlin a huge amount of money to write a script for the sequel. After completing the script, Devlin didn’t turn it in. Instead, he gave the money back to the studio, saying that he felt the script he wrote didn’t live up to his expectations of the first film. Almost 15 years later, Devlin met up with film director Ronald Emmerich to try again when he felt he had finally written the perfect script for the sequel. Talk about being a perfectionist!

Fans of Independence Day have plenty of action to see and the aliens seem to be scary as ever! It doesn't seem like the film is going to disappoint because it has incredible visual effects, brings us adrenaline rushing flying scenes, motivates us to be better people. It also makes us wonder: is there alien life out there and if so, are they waiting for the right time to attack? To find out how it all goes down, watch Independence Day: Resurgence coming to a theater near you on June 24, 2016!
