Vin Diesel and Universal Pictures recently announced that they plan to make at least three more sequels in the Fast and Furious franchise, stretching from next year until 2021. This is a series that has fought hard to keep its place in relevant film history, as well as to give us a reason to return every time.
When Diesel had announced the plans for future installments, he told interviewers:
Paul Walker used to say that eight was guaranteed. And in some ways, when your brother guarantees something, you sometimes feel like you have to make sure it comes to pass...Seven was for Paul, eight will be from him.
With many of the primary actors including Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Michelle Rodriguez already confirming their return for Fast 8, the film's already set to attempt to keep our interest alive in the series, especially without Paul Walker to continue with them. How else can they keep our interest though? Here's just a few things that the series could do to convince me to return to the theaters.
1. A Shaw Family Team-Up
Jason Statham has already confirmed his return for the eighth installment as Deckard Shaw, and Furious 7 didn't only introduce us to Deckard, but also gave us a glimpse at a hospitalized Owen. In the ICU for extensive burns and blunt force trauma after the events of Fast & Furious 6, Deckard had a heart-to-heart conversation with his brother before pursuing Dom and the gang.
Something that I'm dying to see, now that Statham has confirmed his return, would be for Luke Evans to return as well and team up with his big brother to continue their rampage against Toretto. The sixth and seventh films both proved that the Shaws are not good enough to take on the team by themselves. With Furious 7 hinting that Owen is still alive, if only incapacitated for the moment, it's still very possible that he will wake up.
2. The Return of Monica Fuentes
Eva Mendes is currently rumored to be reprising her role from 2 Fast 2 Furious as Agent Monica Fuentes for the eighth installment, but has not been officially confirmed yet. I personally missed her when they brought so many of the previous characters back in Fast Five, especially when Tyrese Gibson returned as Roman Pearce, since the second was his first film as well.
She was a smart, cunning asset to the team and also has ties to law enforcement, which makes her useful for insider intel and skills. Also, she was briefly seen in a cameo appearance at the end of Fast Five with Dwayne Johnson in his office, hinting that she is one of his co-workers at the DSS (Diplomatic Security Service).
3. Full Involvement from 'The Rock'
Agent Hobbs was understandably incapacitated for most of Furious 7, after an altercation with Deckard Shaw toward the beginning of the film. Suffering from broken bones and forced to stay in a hospital bed, he delegates Shaw's capture to Dom and his team, and we don't end up seeing him again until the end. After breaking out of his casts, and storming out of the hospital, he does go all out with a drone's mini-gun and makes one last stand, but it just wasn't enough from him for me.
I really enjoyed having him for most of the experience in the sixth film, and I was really hoping for more from him in the seventh. I'd love to see him in more of this next film and I'm really hoping that this time, the series comes through for me.
Fast 8 is scheduled for an April 14, 2017 release, and the ninth and tenth installments will be released every two years after that! Are you completely done with the Fast and Furious series, or is there something else you'd love to see in the films?
