Fresh from the original Zoolander movie, a mere 15 years ago, it's time again to catch some ‘Z’. The first movie introduced the characters of male models Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel McDonald (Owen Wilson). They are a high-fashion pair of super suave guys who can make heads turn with their looks, but have less intellect than a “See ‘n Say”. In the first movie, Derek Zoolander was able to stop the evil Mugatu (Will Ferrell). Mugatu is locked in Fashion Prison but he is planning his escape and revenge on Derek and Hansel. Derek’s wife Matilda (Christine Taylor) died in a terribly tragic accident, and his son Derek Jr. (Cyrus Arnold) was taken away (because Derek is too dumb to be a good father).
Derek and Hansel are summoned from self-exile by Billy Zane (himself). They are both invited to Rome to work with new fashion queen Alexanya Atoz (Kristen Wiig). She has a new designer Don Atari (Kyle Mooney) creating quite the fashion show. Derek and Hansel meet the androgynous supermodel named All (Benedict Cumberbatch). But several famous celebrities have been killed recently, including Justin Bieber (himself). Interpol agent Melanie Valentina (Penélope Cruz) thinks the murders are connected to Derek and Hansel. She enlists them to assist in finding out the truth. Derek finds out that his son is in Rome, thanks to the help of Agent Valentina. But he finds that his son is ‘Plus Size’ when it comes to modeling. Hansel tells him to look past that and to see the beauty in his son. Hansel never knew his dad, so Derek Jr. should at least have a chance.
Thanks to Derek’s dumbness, Mugatu is able to escape and kidnaps Derek Jr. Hansel is helped by a mysterious robed man, who turns out to be his father, Sting (himself). Mugatu plans to destroy all the current leaders of fashion and design, so he alone will be in charge. This movie could have the alternative name “Zoolander Two: Attack of the Cameos.” Somehow, just about every big name in Hollywood, the recording industry, and high-end fashion are in this movie with a cameo. This includes: Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Macaulay Culkin, Lenny Kravitz, Kiefer Sutherland, Skrillex, Anna Wintour, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and even Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Every scene is a setup for a joke or a gag, and most often they work. This movie revels in its own ridiculousness and it invests in its own insanity. They take nothing seriously, and the movie is better for it. Of course, since it is a sequel, the movie does rely on the audience knowing the main characters from the first Zoolander. If you feel up for a silly sequel and want to gaze upon the Dumb and Dumber of high-fashion models, then take a stroll down the runway to Zoolander 2.
