The Good, The Bad, and the Wicked! Witches have ruled television and films since the historical witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts. The recent release of the film, The Witch, has brought the baddest witches of the north, south, east, and west back into my memory. Get your broomsticks ready! Here comes my personal top ten badass witches from television and films...
10. Theodora and Evanora (Oz the Great and Powerful)
Two badass sister witches, Evanora (played by Rachel Weisz) and Theodora (played by Mila Kunis) rock the film as the two villains. Each one has different powers and each one has different motives at the beginning. Even though Evanora was not in the Wizard of Oz, Weisz brought life to a character we are so used to seeing under a house. This film made me love it so much that I brought my godson to see it two times in theaters.
9. Ursula (The Little Mermaid)
Being the baddest witch in Disney, Ursula brings her A-game to the table, or should I say ocean? She knows how to act sly and make deals that she knows cannot be fulfilled. Her overall look is flawless from her tentacles to her lavender skin to her minion eels. Plus, she has one badass villain song to take the cake. I just love me some Ursula!
8. Aggie Cromwell (Halloweentown Series)
Now, she is probably the nicest witch on this list. But that does not take away from how badass she is! She is probably the coolest grandma ever and has so many spells to conjure up for every situation. She does more than bakes cookies and feed her grandchildren, she turns them into professional witches! These films were my childhood and I will forever adore Aggie as one of the best witches out there!
7. Sally and Gillian Owens (Practical Magic)
Who knew Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman were an amazing pair? These two really took their roles and transformed their overall personalities to fit these two sisterly witches. They are polar opposites and that is what makes the movie what it is. Not only is it a witch movie but it is a movie about family and sisters. A true classic in my house, Practical Magic delivers on every aspect of a witch film. It has spells, possessions, seances, and witchcraft. Perfect for every Halloween season!
6. Sanderson Sisters (Hocus Pocus)
Of course these crazy gals make the list! From Winnie's leadership qualities to Mary's wackiness qualities to Sarah's ditzy qualities, these three "sistahs" fill my house every Halloween with their hilarious film. Each actress is perfect for their respective role. I love anything Hocus Pocus and this film is no different. I was even named after the cat in the film (even though the cat's name is Thackery, my mother thought it was Zachary). These sisters can certainly put a spell on me any day.
5. Lamia (Stardust)
Just look at that gif! She is one ruthless, crazy witch! You thought I was going to say something else? Well think again. Lamia does not need curse words to be her bad self. She has two dumb sisters, much like Winnie from the Sanderson Sisters. Yet she goes solo for the majority of the film to steal her source of youth by stabbing an innocent girl in the heart. Now that is how witches get what they want! She truly defines what it means to be a traditional witch.
4. Regina (Once Upon a Time)
The first witch on the list that comes from television, Lana Parrilla owns her role of Regina. She steals the show every time she appears on the small screen. She deserves her own movie because she is meant to be seen on a much larger screen. Just one of her many quotes of "I will end your happiness" sends shivers down my spine. She can hold my heart in her hands any day. I just hope she will not crush it, like many of her foes.
3. Fiona Goode (American Horror Story: Coven)
Damn, this is one bad witch. Fiona is easily Jessica Lange's best character out of all four seasons she appeared in. She makes bad look good. Even when she acts like the baddest witch in town, she still knows when it is time for her motherly instincts. She is not afraid to take what she wants, even if it means slitting a young witch's throat to stay Supreme. Long live Fiona Goode!
2. Bellatrix Lestrange (Harry Potter Series)
This is easily my favorite member of Voldermort's Death Eaters and one of my favorite characters in all of the Harry Potter series. She makes crazy look so easy. When she brutally killed Dobby, I cried and it made me hate her. But that is what a true villain should do. We all love to hate her and that is why she is easily one of the baddest witches in all of films and television.
1. Nancy Downs (The Craft)
Yes, Miss Nancy Downs is #1. She can be your best friend one day and then turn into the biggest enemy you never want to come across the next. She takes witchcraft to a whole new level and takes it so seriously that she would kill her own friends to evoke the power. Her gothic school girl look walking down the hallways is deliciously modern for a witch. She definitely steals the screen. She haunts my nightmares and lives in my dreams. My mood will never be down because of Nancy Downs.
