With arguably the biggest year in the history of comic book adaptation cinema, Warner Bros. DC is throwing in a couple of chips this year. This will be the first time since 2005 two DC-based films are sharing a release year. When August comes around the corner, we'll certainly be comparing DC's films to each other just as much as we'll compare them to Marvel's. While the ever-so-anticipated Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice waits for us in late March, the second and final DC title has certainly been building up hype. That film, is of course, Suicide Squad. The real question concerning Warner Bros. DC pictures is going to be, "Will Suicide Squad be better than BvS?"

Let's Talk Historical Relevance:

While Dawn of Justice will be the first live action meeting of Batman and Superman on the silver screen, Suicide Squad will be the first villains in the forefront run comic book film. Furthermore, it will be the feature the first cinematic appearances of Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Deadshot, and a slew of other famous and not-so-famous DC antagonists. As awesome as a bunch of bad guys running the show sounds, arguably the two most beloved comic book characters of all time are going to not only stand toe-to-toe, but also shoulder-to-shoulder. With such event in play, whether the film is well received or not, this is a big deal amidst the comic book community.

Casting:

Everyone remember the erupted volcano the internet became when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman? How about adding fuel to the flame when Jesse Eisenberg was crowned Lex Luthor? Not to mention, there were multiple handfuls of people displeased with Gal Gadot taking on the role of Wonder Woman. While now many people have accepted and come to terms with some of the controversial casting calls, there's still some displeased people out there. What about for Suicide Sqaud? Let's see uh...

Will Smith as Deadshot?

Fans: I can see it.

Viola Davis as Amanda Waller?

Fans: That's pretty good.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn?

Fans: Wow...that's great! Beyond great!

Okay...get this. Jared Leto as Joker?

Fans: Now that's got some serious potential!

Simply looking at the opinions of the only people that matter (the fans) it's fairly obvious that David Ayer's picture got more initial thumbs ups than Zack Snyder's

Premise:

This was touched on slightly earlier, but let's dig a little deeper. Here's the official synopsis for Batman V Superman:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

And for Suicide Squad:

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

While both are very interesting premises to me, Suicide Squad appears to have more of an original, one-of-a-kind plot.

Most Recent Trailer:

Now, let's take a look at some actual footage.

Batman V Superman:

Suicide Squad:

Both are very good trailers. I think they established their tones very well in their most recent trailers. What sets Batman V Superman's trailer apart for me is the total bat-assery of Ben Affleck as Batman. I personally felt a little worried following the previous BvS trailer from December, but this most recent one completely brought me back aboard for Dawn of Justice. I was incredibly pleased with Suicide Squad trailer, it was exactly what I wanted it to be. The thing is though, the Batman vs Superman trailer won me over just a little more from the stand point it had more work to do to get me excited.

Fan Service:

This one's a little tricky to dictate now since neither of the films are in theaters. We can, however, do some speculating. Besides cast and plot, fan service is primarily based on actual execution. Let's look at Deadpool for an example. While the casting and plot were great, what really made the movie exceptional was the meta and comedic execution. In Batman V Superman's case, we're gonna be looking heavily on Batman's reasoning for brawling with Superman, the relevance of Wonder Woman, Doomsday, and Lex Luthor, and also the "darker" tone being pitched. On the flip side, Suicide Squad is looking to be more "fun" and "funny;" to be a lighter, less "evil" take on bad guys which is more or less pretty ironic. This one is pretty close, but I think Suicide Squad has an easier job, so it'll be better received since "dark tones" tend to be harder to please fans with.
