Naughty Dog have been making waves in the world of video games for over 20 years. They've gifted us names like Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted, and of course, The Last of Us. Aside from their two most recent IPs, all the other gaming franchises received three main installments followed by a racing game - where's our Uncharted racing game, Naughty Dog?!
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was a surprise. After such a dark and emotional experience with The Last of Us, it felt like the studio was going in a new direction. But Nathan Drake has returned for one final romp, which will finally get its release date on April 26th. But would you have replaced it with The Last of Us 2?
A Naughty Dog Release Date In 2016: Uncharted 4 Vs The Last of Us 2
I've never been a huge fan of Uncharted. The spectacle is always dazzling, the voice acting is superb, and the narratives evoke a wonderful sense of adventure that would make Indiana Jones proud. However, with poor AI, repetitive shootouts and ultimately frustrating gun mechanics, I was never able to completely immerse myself in the world of Nathan Drake.
The Last of Us was a different story. Naughty Dog took everything they'd learned from Uncharted and improved the quality of gameplay. Enemies were clever and challenging and there was a spectacular survival element to the game, as opposed to simply tacking cover and shooting over conveniently-placed walls.
Uncharted 4 is likely to omit this sense of survival that Joel and Ellie were forced under. Therefore, Naughty Dog have stressed the abilities of the game's AI. Enemies are far more intelligent and will attempt to flank you and trick you in numerous ways. With this, they hope to alleviate any previous sense of repetitiveness or simplicity. Sounds intriguing, but I'm not entirely convinced.
Ellie & Joel Over Nathan Drake?
I've no doubt that Uncharted 4 is likely to impress and satisfy me. Its set pieces look dazzling, its graphics are breathtaking and I'm sure that The Last of Us will impact on the quality of Nathan Drake's final venture into the unknown. But perhaps my love for stealth in video games has skewed my view of Uncharted.
I'm excited to see what Naughty Dog do with The Last of Us 2. I'm dying to know whether they'll bravely leave Ellie and Joel alone and start with a new cast of characters, or whether they'll deliver an emotional sequel we couldn't have anticipated.
I'll surely play the hell out of Uncharted 4 in April, but my previous interaction with the series has forced skepticism. Where do you stand? Would you put The Last of Us 2 before Uncharted 4 and give it a release date in April? Let us know in the comments below.
